It's not a gift of an extension. It was a smart deal. JVR is signed at 4.5M through 2017. If he keeps producing at the level he is, it's a very good deal.

He signed him a year before his previous contract expired, off an incredible (unsustainable) hot streak. Same thing happened with Lupul after his big '08 season... signed a year early, later traded. Hartnell as well... signed a year early off a career season, later traded.

As NHL Tonight segued out, the chick was talking a little bit about the rivalry, then Keith Jones chimed in with "2 teams that will be playing each other tomorrow; the Caps on one heck of a roll right now- Holtby included, starting 24 or 25 games in a row, and the Flyers on the heels of a 7-2 rout of the best team in the East in the Tampa Bay Lightning. Should be a good one." Then this host female dog says:

"That's right Keith Jones and these are 2 very good teams that could be meeting each other in the playoffs."

Roenick whips his head around.

Jones goes "....ehhhh well the Flyers are trying to claw back into the picture and can help their chances with a win tomorrow."

Honestly, JvR has 40 points on the season and Voracek has 52 has the highest point getter in yhe league. I'd say JvR is getting paid fair value right now. We were in a strong position and Homer blew it. If the Leafs wanted a Power Forward, offer up Hartnell and only Hartnell.
