He signed him a year before his previous contract expired, off an incredible (unsustainable) hot streak. Same thing happened with Lupul after his big '08 season... signed a year early, later traded. Hartnell as well... signed a year early off a career season, later traded.

When he signed him, and whether the player was traded doesn't change that it was a pretty good contract. Overpayment for a year, then a good cap number for the remaining term.
