Pittsburgh's crew is pretty bad too.

The canadian crews are probably the best. They will actually criticize their own teams.

I always felt the Flyers have done a disservice to their own fans by never really criticizing their own players. There are so many fans who just thinks X player sucks or Y player is great because he scores some goals.

It was kind of nice to see Keith Jones discuss Matt Read's inability to neutralize Stamkos' stick on the his PP goal.

- PhillySportsGuy

Yeah, the Canadian crews are the best. They have a certain level of familiarity with their teams' players (more calling out by name for the home as opposed to by team for the opponent) but they aren't opposed to criticizing them.

That's why I used to love Dornhoeffer when he would "stop it right there" and break plays down for people. Instead of heading "Back to the studio" the broadcasting crew actually would give you some broken down insight into some of the plays. That way, you could see what all 5 players were doing and you could point out blown coverages and bad positioning at times. I miss that.

Well, I THINK it was a punch.

- MBFlyerfan

I think Chara thought it was a punch too. He put his gloved fist in through the back of Paquette's skull.

I liked Dorny and I think the X's and O's stuff is lacking on the current broadcast.

Look, we're here to discuss the facts. Your opinion is irrelevant.

Also, it was posted on the last blog, but Cedric Paquette thought it was a good idea to get tough with Zdeno Chara. After that, he decided to get tough with Chara at the end of the game, as well. Poor poophead.

Few more years and Chara is gone, and hopefully by then we have one of the meaner giants on the Flyers.

Chara against anyone other than Boyle ...

Brian Boyle? He'd turtle just like he did against Matt Carkner. He's only tough when he's got 6 inches and 30 pounds on a guy (i.e. Adam Hall).

Dorny was great.

I watched the video the first time through without sound because I'm at work. What a difference it makes when you have to listen to Edwards.

I can't stand Pittsburgh's crew at all. I don't hear much of Jack Edwards, but I know he's awful.
- johndewar

In my opinion.. if we're talking worst Eastern Conference announcers... Pittsburgh is the worst (and no, it isn't just because I'm a Flyers fan) and Boston is second.

Pittsburgh's guys talk like the Pens can do no wrong.. at all.. ever.. and they have the best players on not only planet Earth, but in the whole humungous big universe, and they feel the need to tell you every other 5 seconds. Every home team announcers a biased some.. but they take he cake. Malkin could break his stick over his knee and stab an opposing player in the throat, and they would be saying "I didn't see anything there.. looks to me like the opposing player slashed Malkin, so if anything he should get the penalty".. I can't leave the Pens channel on for more than 30 seconds at a time, unless I mute it. It's really a shame.

Boston is just as bad... not only are they extremely biased, but their frickin stupid. I remember when a player (can't remember who) followed through on a shot and hit a defending player in the face with his stick... Edwards was crying for a penalty left and right.. I don't remember if it was Brickley or their on ice reporter at the time, that had to correct him and tell him since it was a follow through it's not a penalty.

I agree Bill. I thought the commentary of both announcers was embarrasing.

Really I must have missed that. Chara boards the guy, then Paquett comes over and bumps him, cross check to chest, Paquette throws a punch to Charas face, Chara knocks him out.

We must be watching a different video.

- MBFlyerfan

I'll have to look at it again, because I initially thought that all of Paquette's jabs in the first altercation were below the head.

Listening to Paul Steigerwald broadcast a hockey game is what I would imagine having a spike driven through my ear drum feels like. He's got a smarm factor when he broadcasts that I find every bit as grating as Jack Edwards' spastic homerism.

Chris Therien when he was on the radio never had a problem calling out the Flyers for their play.

He still has his hand on his stick, but he hits Charas face, its not a cross checking motion because the other hand doesn't really move all that much. Its not deflected either.

I wonder if there is any more history between the two players?

The second incident is definitely after some "history" lol

should've kept him and Saunders together, even if it meant making Saunders the PxP guy. I don't mind JJ, but Timmy is the best.

The worst part is how incredibly biased the announcers are there. In the first altercation, Chara hits Paquette in the face and it's all well and good and deserved. In the 2nd altercation, Paquette takes a shot at Chara in the face and the comment is "what is that!!!". Embarrassing.
- MJL

they are the absolute worse broadcasting team in hockey. I cannot stand them.

Switching him and Coatsey was a mistake. Coates doesn't have enough to say to talk all game, and Bundy shouldn't be limited to one or two comments a game.

Bundy also seems to get tongue tied a lot when he does get a chance to say something. But I'm sure doing TV is hard to get used to.

And that's what I love from announcers. Even Jonesy does it from time to time. I want guys to be as honest as possible and not looking through orange, or any other colored glasses. If it's a penalty, it's a penalty.. if the player is dogging it, he's dogging it. Call it for what it is.

I haven't listened to any games on the radio this year, but I don't miss "I'm looking right over his shoulder". I like Coates but he's not a TV guy. Therien is better, but I wouldn't mind seeing him in the booth over Jones. I also like Keith Jones, but he's just winging it.
