I haven't listened to any games on the radio this year, but I don't miss "I'm looking right over his shoulder". I like Coates but he's not a TV guy. Therien is better, but I wouldn't mind seeing him in the booth over Jones. I also like Keith Jones, but he's just winging it. - MJL
It's pretty much exactly what you'd expect. I've caught Coates at least a few times start a big statement and not finish it.
"Well, Foligno is a great player who has an amazing."

Had to take a drink.
I used to love when Coates read the quote of the game. He never, ever got it word for word. He always paraphrased his way through it. |

"You know, when you think about a Flyers/Capitals game, you really have to think about the two teams playing."
"The thing about Taylor Hall is that you have to realize that he's playing hockey."
"The reason they're having so much success is because they're playing well together." |

I would have just let Coates go, he does nothing for me. - jmatchett383
I think the ice level commentator is useless anyway, so it was a perfect fit. It always seemed like they were just doing the guy a favor, letting him hang out and be part of the show. |

And that's what I love from announcers. Even Jonesy does it from time to time. I want guys to be as honest as possible and not looking through orange, or any other colored glasses. If it's a penalty, it's a penalty.. if the player is dogging it, he's dogging it. Call it for what it is. - WarriorHockey21
I EXPECT and want SOME homerism from the local broadcasts, that is part of what makes watching teams interesting. I want them to be happy when their team scores and not so happy when they get scored on. I want to them to be glad their player won the fight and be sheepish when their team does something they shouldn't. You know they know it was wrong, but they are still for the team that employs them
What the Boston, Buffalo, and Pittsburgh guys do, is go far beyond basic homerism and actually do their fans a disservice by not educating them correctly. They actually try to convince the viewer of their teams infallibility, they can do wrong. They put a false narrative out there. Basically, they lie. |

Brian Boyle? He'd turtle just like he did against Matt Carkner. He's only tough when he's got 6 inches and 30 pounds on a guy (i.e. Adam Hall). - jmatchett383
Chara's almost always got that advantage. Can we bring back Hatcher for a brawl? Chris Neil actually gave him a good run for giving up so much height/weight. |

I've said it before, I'll say it again: he really reminded me of a dog riding in a car on the telecast. He doesn't really understand what's going on, he's just happy to be here and having so much fun! |

I've had some downtime at work lately and I was looking through draft picks. The players the Leafs drafted and are active in the league are abysmal. Their best drafted forwards are Alex Steen, Kadri, Kulemin, Tlusty, Stajan and Jimmy Hayes. The best dmen drafted are Stralman, Gunnarsson, Harrison, Schenn and Rielly. At least they drafted Rask...
Obviously they traded a bunch a times but still...There are a few other teams that may be worse than this. Calgary and NJD have had some bad drafts too.
As for the Flyers, the forwards they've drafted and are active are in the top tier of the league, maybe the best, but no goalie they drafted is active and only 3 dmen they selected have played an NHL game this year (Ghost, Sbisa, Seidenberg). |

Hey, never said JJ doesn't lean towards the "homer" side of things..
Although overall, I do like his broadcasting. I listen to a lot of different games throughout the season, and it truly makes me appreciate who we have.
I also enjoy games like Dallas, even SJ.. there's some good announcing crews out there who can cover a game without being annoying.

Chara's response was WAY disproportionate to what Paquette did. - johndewar
I think Chara was responding to Paquette based on his body of work and how he is viewed. The dude is dirty and typically runs from shiite he starts. Always has...always will. |

The canadian crews are probably the best. They will actually criticize their own teams. - PhillySportsGuy
And Canadian national broadcasts >>>>> US national broadcasts.
Feels like NBCSports still spends way too much time on Hockey 101 kind of stuff (Pull Edzo's cord: "4-on-4, forwards have the D, the D have the forwards"). Doc is annoying. That intermission show... JR versus Milbury?? And Pierre talking over and creeping on everybody...
Canadian broadcasts go much more into tactical depth, they don't spend as much time on surface story fluff, and two words: Ray Ferraro.
(they can keep Don Cherry, tho) |

If they had a more old-school/straightlaced PBP guy to go along w/ Clement in the booth, with Boucher full-time in intermissions, the Flyers team would be pretty awesome.

I realize I am in a minority, but I actually like Doc. I realize the NBC broadcasts are not great, but I've historically enjoyed listening to Doc do games.
Also, I like when I get a Canadian broadcast of a game strictly because you get local commercials from that market, which I find highly amusing.

It seems like the US feels it needs to put on a show during the intermissions, so they want personalities like JR and Milbury who will rant and rave about nothing in particular, and then Pierre is their "expert." The Canadiens (aside from Coach's Corner) just basically break down the game itself without having to rely on pizzazz. |

How do you (and everyone else) feel about all games going "Back to the studio" during intermissions? It used to be the play-by-play crew did all of the discussions/breakdowns of the game, but now we're treated to John Buryk (spelling?) and one of Boucher/Tocchet for 15 minutes twice a game and for the majority of pregame and postgame. |

I agree about the nbc sports broadcasts. I can't even watch the intermissions with JR and Milbury.
I don't dislike the flyers guys. I just think they could be a little more honest about mistakes. I know it's a fine line. I don't blame them or think they're stupid. They know what the issues are. |
