Look at the cap space this team has and had.

If you're a good GM, you make things happen.

Apparently the best Murray could do was some washed up has beens.

I certainly hope the future holds better things for Mr Murray.

What has Nolan proven to earn your respect?
- theblueandgold

Getting every team he has ever coached to overachieve.
And...

Ontario Hockey League
Nolan became head coach of the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in 1988, as a mid-season replacement and coached there until the end of the 1994 season. Nolan led the Greyhounds to the three consecutive Memorial Cup tournament berths, winning the Canadian national junior championship in 1993.

Buffalo Sabres,
Nolan was hired before the 1994–95 NHL season as an assistant coach by the Hartford Whalers for one season before accepting the position of head coach of the NHL's Buffalo Sabres where he had his greatest success. In his second season in Buffalo, he led the team to a strong regular season, culminating in the Northeast Division title. He was rewarded with the Jack Adams Award as the league's top coach.

New York Islanders,
When the New York Islanders fired head coach Steve Stirling in January 2006, team owner Charles Wang reportedly called Nolan to ask him to take over the team. Nolan said that he felt a sense of responsibility toward Moncton and would not leave them mid-season.

On June 8, 2006, Wang dismissed interim coach Brad Shaw and announced the hiring of Nolan as the new head coach. New York Post hockey columnist Larry Brooks quickly criticized Wang for hiring Nolan at the same time that he hired a new general manager, Neil Smith, rather than allow Smith to hire a coach who would report to him.[2] On July 18, Smith was fired as general manager and Garth Snow was named as his replacement.

In his first season with the Islanders in 2006–07, he led the team to a 92 point season and its first playoff berth since 2003–04. On April 20, 2007, Ted Nolan's 8th seeded Islanders fell in five games to his former team, the top-seeded Buffalo Sabres

Latvia men's national ice hockey team
In 2013 Latvia qualified for the 2014 Winter Olympics under Nolan's leadership.
They then upset favoured Switzerland in the qualification playoffs 3-1. Advancing to the quarterfinals, Latvia lost a hard fought match to defending Olympic champions Team Canada 2-1, being the last team to score against the Canadians who went on to shutout their next two opponents to defend their gold medal. It was Latvia's best ever Olympic result as they finished eighth overall.

Philanthropy
Ted is very active in his foundation, the Ted Nolan Foundation.

Yes because free agents were lining up at the door to play for Teddy on a last place team that the GM inherited. Lets throw crazy contracts at average players its worked in the past...Ville Leino anyone?

Please

This.

And other than Myers and Ennis, there's no one of any real trade value (thank you, Darcy, NOT Tim Murray) on this roster.

Bills hired David Lee as QB coach.
Lee has spent the last two seasons working with Geno Smith on Rex Ryan's Jets staff. He was also the Bills QB coach in 2012, where he oversaw Ryan Fitzpatrick's eventual release from Buffalo. It's an underwhelming hire at a position that is the biggest question mark going into 2015. Lee is said to have a favorable view of E.J. Manuel.

Well, sheee-it, why aren't Chicago, Pittsburgh, Anaheim, St. Louis or any of the other top teams lining up to procure his genius then?

Because they all know he's an average coach.

Motivational speaker, perhaps?

Good leaders lead and know how to motivate and how to hit the right note on that trumpet that leads to a battle as one.

It goes both ways.

If Murray was respected at all, some would have wanted to play under such a "genius".

The only thing he has won is 1 memorial cup and that was 22 years ago.

Since they he has taken teams (mostly by riding the best goaltending in the world) or a hot goaltender to a few playoff berths.

So again what has he won?

At the end of the day, Nolan is not a good NHL coach, and Hasek is the reason he had 1 good season in the NHL.

We were talking about Murray but if you are talking about Nolan and a losing skid with this roster?

Like I said previously, seriously look at this roster.

When I look at it I laugh.

Even Nolan could only keep Latvia one goal away from victory against Canada and it's just about the same comparison.

This roster with a real NHL roster.

Anyone that blames Nolan is out of their minds.

Anyway, I'm out, spent far too much of my family's time on here.

Players don't care about management's intelligence level. All they see is the stuff that's important to them. Coach, city, teams chance at a cup.

He's doing what's been the recipe for success amongst other (current) elite teams. Why is that so bad? I understand why you may disagree with the method personally but I don't think it's fair to dismiss his abilities as a gm. Sure all he's done is tank but that's what part 1 of this style of rebuild. Still far too early to give him high praise or criticism.

So a GM is the leader that is supposed to get the most out their hockey team?? I thought that was the coach...

Murray has a plan, the plan is to tank, Nolan knows the plan, signed his 3 year contract and you feel sorry for him and want to defend him...makes perfect sense.

This team is doing exactly what it is meant to do...LOSE

Even Murray said about the 10-3 stretch, the numbers still showed they should have lost more games. This team is bad by design. Something that both Tim Murray and Teddy inherited. Yet you feel bad for poor Teddy...its unreal.
