I get that this team is epically bad, but how can they outplay a team like Detroit for the whole 1st period and then look like a USHL team the next two periods? |

Not sure why this would be surprising. After all, they pulled it together for a ten game stretch earlier in the year. |

i dont think it was all buffalo on that. Detroit played much better in the 2nd and 3rd.. they looked out of it in the first. |

The articles about us tanking really are ridiculous. What were we supposed to do? Our core stunk so we traded them for picks and players. Re-tooling on the fly doesn't work unless you have a strong core. I don't feel at all embarassed about what we've done.

The core problem with a lot of the anti tankers(doesn't apply to everyone) that stand on a pedestal of pride like Harrington is that they tell you everything that's wrong with tanking but offer no valid solution. And I don't mean valid on a subjective level (i.e difference of opinion on how to build), i mean they generally don't have an answer.
Conversation goes something like. "what a disgrace on-purposely tanking and breeding a losing culture...something something OILERS (because it always turns into something about the oilers)
But then when you ask them what they would do about acquiring high end talent to build a cup competitive team the conversation usually yields one of of two responses
a) "Not my problem, Good Gm's figure out a way" (hello, he just did).
b) "But edmonton!!!!"
My favourite quote on this matter: "There’s nothing wrong with wanting a franchise player. There’s a lot wrong with disgracing the brand in the process to get one."
As oppose to the juggernaut the brand was before they began the tank? The whole point in getting the franchise player is to rebuild the brand....as a winner. How is it the person who constantly berates the leafs for being a joke for continuing to promote mediocrity can sit there with a straight face and say what the sabres are trying to do is a disgrace. These are the same people who lambasted this organization for constantly hovering on that 8th-10th line during the Regier/Golisano years.
You know what's more disgraceful than tanking for one guy? Doing just enough to give fans false hope to turn profits. |

You're dead on with all of that. The other one that drives me crazy is "how many McDavids would it take to fix this team". Given that we are stocked with prospects (including an elite center) and will have at least two other first rounders in the next draft the answer is "one". Like you I would much rather go this route than watch games of the "competitive" 2010 team.

Agreed, as if implying the sabres will just stop making moves entirely post 2015 draft. |

He's a project, still lot's of holes in his game and you wonder if he can bring it at the nhl level.
That being said i really liked the pick, pretty good skater and he's got offensive upside. |

That's what I like about Uncle Terry's position. At this point we need quality over quantity so he had the luxury of being able to shoot for the stars with high-ceiling guys like Martin. Most won't work out but some might work out in a big way.

In the offensive end yea i could see that, a lot of similar traits. I think Irish's comaprison of McCabe is a pretty good one too. I'd just say that McCabe is a little more "polished" if that makes any sense? |

I agree, but it does raise some questions about choosing lemieux with pick 31, which kinda screams safe pick. on the other hand (it has been mentioned here before) if he can be anything close to what his dad was it's probably a pretty good pick. |

Like it or not, Darcy Regier put this team in a position where tanking was really the only option. Not doing that puts this team ridiculously far from championship contention for at least a decade. That doesn't make the current route a guarantee, but it is the highest chance of success given the state of the team, and that started about 2 or 3 years ago. This team needs a player to build around badly. The draft is by far the best way to get one in the league's current climate. |
