One thing they do, whether through internal budget or whatever, that I respect is that they set a number that they'll pay you and will move you if you don't sign.

I don't think they're necessarily cheap, either -- they pay guys, bring guys in with term or who they have to re-sign or try to, like Visnovsky and Vanek.

But I do admire them for saying, "We value you at this, and we're not going higher. If you get it elsewhere, fine, but you won't get it here."

Because sometimes, you just have to let players walk, or move them.

Visnovsky and Nabokov were both unhappy when they ended up on Long Island. A year later, they both wanted to stay and signed extensions. I guess there's something players like there. Money is one of them. The Nabokov thing was weird though. He flat out refused to play for them, then signed an extension later on.
