Garth just posted up a blog mentioning how the Sabres need to act fast and start shipping out players before the Yotes do, also trading Myers for ROR. Do I dare say he's right on starting before the Yotes for trades? - SABRES 89
In a weird kind of way I am almost in favor of doing absolutely nothing. If the main goal is to suck really really bad the current mix of players is excelling. My fear is addition by subtraction.

Serious question:
Is this a chicken and egg thing, though?
If the players don't get to police themselves anymore, and have the ability to do this stuff without having any fear of physical retribution, is that what leads to this sort of behaviour?
I think the league has to either weed these guys out of the game completely, or permit the old time enforcers to do their thing.
(PS. I'm not saying that either Kaleta or Scott are the right kind of "old time enforcer.") - Der Kaiser
I don't think you could get away with allowing the "old time enforcers" to do their thing anymore. Just look at what the NFL has done with rules such as targeting, leading with the helmet, etc. There would be such an uproar among the public for the type of "goonery" that would ensue. It would be a PR nightmare.
I'm all for weeding those guys out. |

As long as top 9 players are allowed to get away with dirty, cheap hits with minimal slap on the wrists, there will always be a place for scott and kaleta
sad isn't it - homiedclown
That's the point of Ryan's blog though. The reason those guys are supposedly in the league is to deter players for taking cheapshots. The problem is that they really deter nothing.

Oh my, this will make the Rinaldo stuff interesting. Pulled from a comment in the Pens blog:
Some have commented on what a joke the NHL's stance on player safety is. You want to know what is really a joke?
Who will be weighing in on how to discipline Rinaldo - none other than Chris Pronger, who is on the Flyer's fricking payroll! - stashu
I think he appreciates concussions enough to help ban this behavior. Plus, it's not like it was Giroux delivering the hit. Rinaldo is worthless. |

I kindly disagree!
I think if a player knows there is not an instigator rule, they might not try that extra hit, slash or pick on the star player? It gives the team back their balls to police their own team (not the league).

Adding respectable young talent for Stafford and Stewart will always and forever be a great idea. |

How is Pittsburgh signing Ehrhoff a Murray transaction? After he's bought out he has nothing to do with Murray. |

I really don't think the instigator rule has anything to do with it. In today's day and age, with all the anti-violence rhetoric that is prevalent (not just in sports), it would ultimately reflect poorly on the sport's brand and image. If the NHL decided to go retroactive with the 1970s type attitude, it would not bode well publicly. |

It was just kind of relative to Murray's doings. |

The instigator rule being removed wouldn't do jack. Rinadlo hits Letang like that instigator rule or not.
Unless Rinaldo gets 20+ games the NHL will again fail with this whole player safety thing. |

Bettman doesn't care
takes the fans for a given
instead of growing the sport in the states, he hinges on the larger markets in the usa and canada to keep showing up
grow the sport
have each team play 2 games a year on neutral sites to increase the fans
suck it up and give espn an offer they can't refuse to show games 2 nights a week and be a focal point of sportscenter
dedicate player safety instead of lip service
or keep things the way they are and in a few years another lock out will happen because the cap is rising too quick |

Better stated: the house was only a 1/4 mile away. You probably walked 1.3 miles to get there.
