why because you say so? one guy hits, fights and is noticeable most nights if healthy....Matt Read had 2 ok seasons as a 20 goal scorer and has been absolutely brutal this year....Downie has had 3 fairly productive seasons before this one and too use one of your terms....Is on "pace" this year to have another good one.
- landros 2

2 okay seasons? Matt Read scored 20+ goals while checking against opposition top lines in heavy defensive zone starts which is a detriment to putting up offense, while also scoring at 2nd line ES levels. His seasons were more then just okay, they were outstanding for how he has been used and the role he has been in. That's why!

if how you measure a player is by one stat then I guess I stand corrected.....
- landros 2

Okay.

Matt Read does not have a 25-game suspension on his rap sheet.
Matt Read does not leave his team shorthanded nearly as much as Steve Downie.
Matt Read has been an effective PKer for the bulk of his career.

Not really, move VL back to center and bring up any one of Jones/Gordon to fill the last spot.

If they were really trying to avoid a weaker lineup, they'd have had Akeson on L2 last night, anyway.

- Tomahawk

Yes, really because Read is still better then Jones/Gordon.

outstanding??? maybe in the eyes of Flyer fans in Philadelphia....but he's on the third line for a reason. because that's where he belongs...and this year that's debatable....I truly hope read can find his game...or better yet the one you seem to think he has.

Sure, but at some point in time, since we're losing anyway, you have to wonder how much a competent backup really matters. Further, Read is -8 with fewer goals than Umberger, VLC, VDV and PEB, so I wonder how hard it would be to find an equivalent replacement for his game as it stands right now.
- wolfhounds

The Flyers don't have the mindset that a lot of fans have, that the season is a loss and it doesn't matter anymore. We may disagree, but in my opinion the best situation is to let Read try and fight through it and find his game again.

Has zero to do with Akeson for me. Replace Rinaldo with Steve Ott or Brandon Prust and I'm 100% on board with it. Teams need toughness and skill. Not a brain dead thug.
- Jsaquella

If you move a tough and gritty player like Hartnell because you feel his price tag is too high and habve enough scoring, at least replace that grit and toughness. We should have signed Ott, no question in my mind. The lack of toughness is no surprise to me.

Him play no physical hockey....which is why I think Downie is a better hockey player...he can do BOTH...now theres a concept for ya!!! a well rounded player.

Nothing to do with the eyes of Flyers fans. Give his line any number you want, but look at icetime in those seasons. Read is among the leaders on the team in ES icetime, and is a key penalty killer on the team.

Hey, not saying he is or he isn't right now... just that there is a competent replacement for him on hand, and it's not debilitating to the roster.

If we're dealing with a more rounded player, I'll take Read who can check against top lines, play on the PK, and in the past has put up superior numbers to Downie.

I know exactly what he is saying, and a competent player is not the point. A better player is the point.

I would stick with Read and hope things turn around. I'd also get Umberger off that line.

when Downie is under control, which for the most part has been the way he's played the last few years he has been very effective player....things didn't work in Philly for what ever reason, but he's had some real good years as a physical, agitating, tough player to play against with some decent skill.
Matt Read ?
as far as his PK skills I will let his play on the PK this year speak for itself...it's been historical...not in a good way.

Read's multiple 20+ goal, 40+ point seasons on the third line are ok.

Downies single 20+ goal, 40+point season while playing with Stamkos is good. He had other good ones too.

Oh, I thought we were looking at a player's entire career as opposed to half of the current season.

Silly me.

Yes, based solely on this season, Steve Downie is playing better than Matt Read, and Calvin Pickard is the best goalie in the league.

It just needs to be removed all together from the game.
