you should be able to plaster a guy who is right up against the boards...i have a problem with it if the guy is 3-5 feet from the boards and gets sent into the boards, head first or otherwise.
i see why it's a penalty (refs see rinaldo and in that split second think he hit numbers which is understandable at that speed)
not sure i like the call but i get it - black_francis
You can plaster a player who is right up against the boards. Just can't do it from behind the player.

oh i know. its brutal. its tough to find good places to go out in philly. and the vast majority of people in their earily to mid 20s are vapid (frank)ups who flock to places like that.
needless to say, the hockey conversations are typically IQ reducers. - stayinthefnnet
It's like that pretty much anywhere. I've gone to places and had people drone on and on about everything they hear on WIP like it's gospel. |

It would be relevant if I actually did that. The trouble is, I didn't. What I actually said, several times, was that the combination of the repeated incidents, Rinaldo's cavalier attitude about about last night's incident despite knowing full well he was going to be suspended and his disregard for the situation he put his teammates in as well as the fact that he's, at best a borderline NHL player are all contributing factors.
I've said that the hit last night was not especially egregious, in and of itself, and if that was the only incident on Rinaldo's record, it'd be no big deal. But hey, if you want to go on about reality, at least get what I said sort of correct. - Jsaquella
ya know what, this conversation has been fruitless all day and wearing on me, im sure it is you. im done with it. screw rinaldo i dont care really, i think my sentiment has become as lost as the one i argued against i respect you and the others here value our friendships here more thani do the topic it was a bit of fun earlier but its been carried away, im done, peace out. |

what a (frank)ing joke. he makes a very bold, yet vague statement without backing anything up as if it's fact. it's (frank)ing absurd.
he's a (frank)ing douche nozzle and so are the penguins and their fans.
nobody within their right mind would defend the rinaldo hit. he's a terrible hockey player, with a bad history, and should not be in the league. simple as that. to say the organization is repugnant and a guy like rinaldo is indicative of the real ethos and culture of the team is absurd. the flyers are soft and haven't played a bruising style for years. have they had a random thuggish type over the years? yes. but so do many other teams. the flyers are not the bullies. they haven't been for years.
the pens have had plenty of dirt bags over the years, cooke and neal most recently and that (frank)ing hack that injured mason at the end of last season. even crosby with his ball punching from behind is an example.
so (frank) you, (frank) your fans, (frank) your team, your beat writers, pxp announcers and their relatives.
the narrative is old, tired, and false. |

I had a guy, his wife worked with my wife, go on a tirade about how bad Giroux was, asking how he was a MVP finalist and saying it was ridiculous that people felt he was an elite player.
Then I showed him this

He said, "I had no idea" and didn't mention hockey the rest of the evening |

i've watched the hit countless times-
rinaldo DID NOT take too many strides which would result in a charge
rinaldo DID leave his feet enough for someone to warrant the hit illegal
rinaldo DID hit him from behind- it's close and i see why people say he hit the shoulder but there is simply better ways to make that hit without breaking the rules
rinaldo DID NOT hit him late. i don't consider the puck "long-gone" and the puck even comes back toward both players a split second later- not buying the late hit theory
i believe letang did admire his play a bit. |

i agree. perhaps letang made himself a little more vulnerable than he should have. but at the same time, he may have not been expecting to get hit because of the whole no longer having the puck thing. its not as if he was driving to the net with his dead down. - stayinthefnnet
I hear you. But this aspect raises the question...how long after a player gives up possession of the puck is an opposing checker permitted to finish his imminent check? If you look at the real time video with game clock, Rinaldo contacts Letang in what's probably just shy of a second after he gets rid of the puck. That's not that late by practical on-ice NHL standards...we both know that players are basically permitted by the officiating crew to finish their checks within a certain amount of time after their target gets rid of the puck.
But what happens when it comes down to interpretation of the rule after the fact, by the disciplinary committee? Do they just use their subjective judgement as well or does the rule indicate a specific amount of time allowed in such situations? |
