The Penguins got Barnaby, Oliwa, and Steve McKenna all at once one season. I think they wanted to make Jan Hrdina tougher. - Johnny Wrath
Thats a pretty brutal squad..
Nothing compared to the 91-92 Sabres..
Rob Ray, Brad May, and Gord Donnelly all had over 300 PIM that year. 7 players total with over 100 PIM.

Which is it? Are the Flyers "still" playing "goon hockey" or are they getting "softer and softer every year?" Can't have it both ways.
Most Flyers fan actually want a shift AWAY from players like Rinaldo and want to embrace a youth movement based on speed and skill. But I guess that's not the cool narrative.
By the way, I love how the Penguins never had "goons" or "dirty players" like Ulf Samuelsson, Troy Loney, Matthew Barnaby, George Laraque, Paul Baxter, Darius Kasparitis, Bob Boughner, Krystof Oliwa... - jmatchett383
Soft D on Sid isn't the same as goon hockey. You know that.
So am I a sissy/incorrect to say the Pens would like to shift AWAY from the players you mentioned and play a speed, skill game? Do you agree that they are certainly capable of that? But a certain unnamed team or 2 that happens to be in our division prevents that? Chicken or the egg scenario.
Don't get me wrong everyone, self included, enjoys the physical aspects of the game. Last nights game was great except for the "hit".

You didn't say the defense was soft, you said the Flyers were getting "softer and softer every year." I'm not sure how else I'm supposed to take that.
And I'm not implying that the Penguins are a goon team or ever were. My point is that the stereotypical "FLYERS ARE ALL GOONS THEY PLAY GOON HOCKEY!" is done and is perpetuated simply by pointing out isolated incidents which every other team has had in equal abundance for the last 15 or so years. |

Yes, soft as in their D. Then I mentioned Crosby's room/free ice and Coburn/Grossmans absence.
I seem to remember a Flyer Dman constantly in his grill ie. Hatcher, Pronger, Mezaros, Coburn. Doesn't seem to be a deployed game plan anymore. Rightfully so as he hasn't produced as he can anyway, which I also mentioned.
I think by bringing up the players and calling them "dirty" implied that. And, the stereotype is not done. It seems to be alive, well and festering for half of Philly's fanbase over on Philly's HB blog. |

Just a reminder for tonight, the Pens and Blackhawks are "rivals"...
You know, because they had that four game playoff series 23 years ago, and they played against each other on crappy ice in one of the 17 outdoor games last NHL season. |

You mean the blog where 90% of us don't want Rinaldo on the team any more?
And calling them "dirty" and "goons" was to show that all/most teams have/had players like that past and present. Not just the Flyers. |
