yea that was the other factor. But i mean between his overpayment and the role they basically forced him into he was doomed to fail. It doesn't look like either will happen with Armia.

I think the blame on regier (and/or maybe golisano) is that they had a chance to extend some of these guys before hand but decided to play hardball instead (vanek and briere come to mind). Didn't Briere at one point ask for a Roy-esque contract?

The argument is that had Darcy not said "we will match any offer for Vanek", Kevin Lowe wouldn't have done what I did. I say it's irrelevant. If Kevin Lowe was serious about an offer sheet, and obviously he was, it was going to be a figure like that no matter what Darcy said or didn't say. It needed to be in order to tempt the Sabres to not match.

Yea i remember that and i would agree it's irrelevant. I just remember it being mentioned on here that Vanek's agent first asked for around 4x4 and Darcy said no, perhaps why he took some heat for it.

The Campbell scene was just as bad with Darcy

Campbell's agent makes a reasonable offer to the sabres before his last season starts, and Darcy says we are not doing contracts right now. Then around December his agent reaches out again to the sabres with a slightly higher offer, due to Campbell's solid play and Darcy balks. Then Soupy plays in an all star game and when it's the 23rd hour Darcy offers Campbell the smaller offer the agent threw at Darcy in the off-season.

At that point of course the agent has told Campbell your getting the big contract this off-season and the pp has never been the same since for the sabres.

This i remember vividly, but I think the real issue (or at least what the canadian media was saying) was that Darcy wouldn't budge on the length of the contract. Not sure if that's a Darcy problem or a Golisano problem.

I don't know what other competitions there are, but it seems like fastest skater makes the most sense.
