We have plenty of players who can fight, NHL and AHL. If we really wanted to "send a message" we could have brought up Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond. Now that is a goon - znagle
Could've unchained Big Mac from his cell next to Multiple Migs too. Pretty sure he'd work for peanuts again. |

I'd like to point out that if Laughton had been available and not hurt Rinaldo would have been in the press box...
So yes he dressed and he was an idiot but it was not our first option of player. |

The Flyers made an investment in Rinaldo by resigning him to a two year deal in the hope that he would mature and improve as a player. What the Flyers need to do is send a further message to Rinaldo, that his actions are not acceptable. He needs further punishment then just how many games he is suspended by the League. They have to send a clear message to Rinaldo, and he has to spend significant time in the Flyers doghouse, in hope of getting through to the player. I'm not one of those who feel that Rinaldo is a useless player with zero ability. However, it's come to the point where the risk and liability has begun to outweigh the ability and usefulness of the player. If he can't mature and grow as a player, then the Flyers need to move on. The Flyers are not without dirt on their hands, as they are partly responsible for the player that Rinaldo is also. |

I always thought the Flyers took pride in being "Broad Street Bullies" and intimidating/injuring/destroying? I'm confused? Flyers were that for 40+ years? It's like how Germans think nothing happened from 1933-1945.
Neal and Cooke were shipped out for these reasons. Especially Neal. Why would they trade a 40+ goal guy for a 20 goal guy and a depth forward? Cuz he's dirty. Pens tried to change Cooke's play (and Neal's) and it wasn't taking. Buh bye.
Even in Philly I always thought Downie was reactionary. Obviously this writer didn't see Downie last night. 1 goal, tons of CLEAN hits, unreal puck possession numbers, by far his best game in a pens uniform. If a game heads south (say after a intent to injure boarding major) then yes, Downie will get involved.
Farnham provided much needed spark when the Pens were riddled with injuries during his last call up. Had 1 fight and actually drew 7 penalties. Wouldn't expect anyone here to know that tho. Most "goons" aren't 5'10" and 180 either. - stowerkraut
So noble of the Pens. When is Malkin getting traded?
Such a spark Farnham provided...that's why he was sent back down to the AHL.

I think everyone on this blog will admit that, up until about the 04/05 lockout, the Flyers had that "we need a fighter mentality." It continued in part after the lockout, but to a lesser degree. Most teams had the same "the Penguins had Goddard and the Laraque). In the past 4-5 years, the Flyers have been moving away from this and are trying to become a more skill-oriented team. They're not there yet, and still have remnants of the old players from the previous regime. But basically, they are not the same Broad Street Bullies from the 70s or even the 90s.
But that's not the popular narrative. |

Hopefully Rinaldoh get's double digits, maybe just maybe we see Akeson on the ice again and in a top 6/9 role
Things got spicy that's what happens when you have two teams that don't like one another.
Rinaldo is an idiot, and the Flyers once again beat the flightless birds, the end. Time to move on.

Voracek attacked Scuderi for a clean hit. He didn't "try" to initiate a fight or go face wash him for it, he just outright jumped him. Scuderi who's not a dirty player in the slightest, and never fought anyone in his 10 years in the league. So yeah, to the Pittsburgh fans, it was a douchey thing to do when it was a clean hit. Take the check, Nancy, and play on. I'd say that to anyone who was on the receiving end of a perfectly thrown hip check. - simethos
The hit was borderline low close to the knee, and it is a dangerous hit. I don't like that Voracek took himself out of the game for 15 minutes, but like that he stood up for himself and got pissed off. I also think the fight showed that Voracek is strong as an ox. |

Should do like the Sbres did with Patrick Kaleta: Send him down to the AHL and tell him he won't be back until his game is changed
Kaleta made it back. Either Rinaldo would be smart enough to figure it out, or not
After this, every game the Flyers play him where he injures a player or hurts the team is on them, because while you should have known it before, there are no excuses left |

If you have the time to Youtube every NHL player that's ever slashed or hacked another behind a play... then label them as dirty so be it.
Farnham's needs to "goon" it up in the AHL since he didn't make the NHL ASG and wouldn't be playing for a week. WB/S now requires his services. |

Finally, a rational person. - Oneonta Penguin
You know, when you step into another team's forum, you might want to get a sense of the discussion before you start throwing generalities around. Talk in Flyers threads has been largely against Rinaldo, with a few outliers.
Also, if you plan on visiting, don't call people "champ." You're being rude and dismissive, which really is unnecessary. |

If you watched any other Flyers game besides this last one you would see that the Flyers are from being the "Bullies". This team lacks consistent physical play. It is one of the main reasons I think they will not make the playoffs. Are you more upset that you lost the game or that you got thumped yet again by the Flyers?
Rinaldo is a dummy and I hope he never plays in the NHL again.
Also, Rinaldo is only 5' 11" 185lbs. Him and Farnham should hang out. Neither will have to worry about playing in the NHL again until the Flyers and Pens meet again right?

I think there's 2 separate issues here:
1) Rinaldo - no matter what the other team does, there's really no place for what Rinaldo did. It's a stupid hit and he deserves whatever suspension he gets (probably more).
2) Everything else - I don't think I'd call what Voracek did a "thug play." It wasn't like he came at Scuderi and 2-handed him. He got heated and skated up to Scuderi, and they both dropped their gloves.
I agree that I don't think Pittsburgh initiated all the play simply by calling him up. But they did send a message that they were willing (and expecting) to engage in some goonery. - jmatchett383
They also have 143 more penalty minutes this year than do the Flyers. So there's some distortion of reality in the meanie Flyers script that keeps being recited by the opposition.

Anyone who watches the Flyers recently realizes that we haven't been the Broad Street Bullies in years.

I think Bill was looking at Downie's whole history of play and not 1 game.

Height and weight don't make you a non-goon. Rinaldo is 5'11" and 185. |

I made that point yesterday to a Pens fan. If anyone thinks the Flyers are this big bad physical team that goons it up, they haven't watched many Flyers games this year. If anything the've been a soft team for much of the season. |

I guarantee Rinaldo dresses next game. Not Farnham. Unless Pens are decimated with injury and they are forced to.

Perfectly said, Bill.
I will be ecstatic if the Flyers jettison Rinaldo. Still no idea why they rushed into an extension. At least with a guy like Carcillo or Downie, it's a guy with skill that translates into stretches of good or at least productive play. Rinaldo barely scored 10 goals in juniors.
