There were hints of that earlier, they refused it for this season over escrow concerns.

No biggie... 5% of $73M is only $3.6M less per team. Peanuts.

Yeah, we're only $5mm or so north of the cap, and as we've seen with the Hartnell trade, it's easy as pie to dump a big long term deal. Hell, they got rid of Vincent Lecavalier easily enough, right?
- Jsaquella

Everyone on the team is signed for next season, except for Schultz, Del Zotto, Bellermare, Vandevelde, and who ever is going to be the back up goalie. I don't expect Emery back, Zepp could possibly be the backup next season, so I think there are some minimal cap savings there. As far as the defense, there's going to be moves made there. At least one defenseman that is signed for next season is going to be traded at some point. So there's cap space to be gained there. Also have the possibility of a buyout of a player. So while the Flyers aren't going to be sitting with a boatload of cap space to use, but they have some ways to create some needed cap space. Every year it's the same thing, cap panic.

As a hypothetical, the Flyers trade Luke Schenn, buyout RJ Umberger, that leaves them with 6.6M of gained cap space. Now add in however much the cap goes up!

Does anyone know for a fact that's going to happen? An article is written with the opinion from one agent, and it's cap panic.

Don't worry, everyone from this 25th place juggernaut is signed except for a few 4th liners.

Everyone wants the team to build through the draft and to exercise patience, and not get into any long term deals with free agency. What happened to that? Now cap panic has ensued!

If cap growth stays stagnant, the Flyers will be less able to trade away some of their more onerous contracts, because other teams will have less cap room to take on the salaries that they Flyers are trying to deal away.

Even guys who are only slightly overpaid will be more difficult to deal for solid returns, because other teams will be looking for more value-especially with the kind of guys the Flyers would probably prefer to deal.

Not really cap panic, only somebody who habitually engages in hyperbole would go to that extent, but definitely a concern. Anything that could hamper the Flyers ability to rid themselves of highly paid third pair defensemen and declining stars who are now in the bottom 6 among forwards should be a concern.

Unless of course, you have such thick orange glasses you can't find the ability to criticize or accept others being critical of the Flyers actions.

The cap is not going to stay stagnant, it's going to rise, it's just a question of how much. There's already plenty of teams that are well under the cap, even at the number that it is at right now. There is always a trade market for defenseman, especially in the off season. The Flyers, as every other team also has, have a number of ways to create cap space to make some moves.

The cap projection (73M) was made when the Canadian dollar was worth $0.88. Today the exchange rate is $.80. Roughly a quarter of league income is Canadian dollars. Oil is really just soggy right now, and that's probably not going to change in time for next season.

I think the NHL should weigh the cap against a neutral index for the foreseeable future, like the Big Mac index value for Singapore.

It was just a projection. The cap is going to go up, just a question of how much.

Not sure what Oil has to do with the NHL salary cap.

25% of net exports from Canada are petroleum products. The drop in valuation in that industry has a very drastic influence on the economic conditions; this ripples into heavy industry, mining, and oil exploration. British Columbia stands at particularly high risk of market effects.

Not an economics expert, but if that affects the Canadian dollar it could affect the cap . As Bill Daly said in the article linked on the other page, the Cap is based on a yearly average, not a snapshot in time. Daly also doesn't think the shrinking Canadian dollar will drop the cap as much as some think. Regardless it's a crapshoot, and just have to see what it is when the time comes.

More and more disparity between rich and poor and the cap keeps going on up.

NHL was projecting $4.4B in total revenue. 50% of that is player share, or $2.2B. 25% of that comes from Canadian teams (~$550M).

The CAD has dropped 9% since the NHL's Dec. revenue projection. So we're looking at upwards of $50M that would have gone to player salaries lost to the exchange rate.

Divide by 30-teams, that's $1.66M less per team to spend, if the CAD stops dropping today.

Still not a snapshot in time. Revenue was being collected at times when the CAD was higher. Daly even stated that it's not going to affect it as much as people think. The cap is going to be what it will be, and the upper limit will be plenty of money to put a team on the ice. The cap was projected to be higher for this season then the final number of 69M.

It's not like the league's $73M number is based off anything more than a snippet either (a month or two of the season)... unless they've got Miss Cleo in their accounting dept.

That number could end up being less than expected.
