There isn't a single logical or reasonable argument that can be made to show that the money either the owners or the players make, is unethical. They've created a product that generates billions of dollars in revenue. There is nothing wrong with any player getting whatever share of that revenue pie he can command. Nor is there anything unethical about an owner making whatever profit the product they have invested in, and created, brings them.
- MJL

There's at least 1, and it's pretty big: a lot of owners/franchises get taxpayer help. For millionaires and billionaires, that's absurd, but that's American welfare for you.

Anyway, leaving now...

Don't worry, everyone from this 25th place juggernaut is signed except for a few 4th liners.

What are the reasons why they would get taxpayer help? What makes that unethical?

Some ideas on how to make the all star game more fun for all!

1. Players must play drunk

2. Refs must work the game blindfolded (not that there would really be much difference!)

3. Exploding pucks

4. Victoria Secret models, in lingerie, to serve as Ice Girls

5. Picking up girls at bars to be added to the skills competition

6. halfway through each period, a live polar bear will be released onto the ice

7. Pierre Maguire is to be gagged for the entire game

8. Gladiator death matches to be held between periods: 1st 2 contestants are Zac Rinaldo and Matt Cooke.

9. Line combinations are to be picked out of a hat prior to the start of the game. This is known as the Craig Berube rule!

10. The players on the losing team must wear t-shirts that say "WE LOVE GARY BETTMAN" during the post game press conferences.

Like.. Besides exploiting human desire of entertainment for immense profits? For example, tickets, jerseys, concessions, parking, anything and everything COULD (should) be half the price with players/owners still making far more than the average working salary. But instead, the system in which they prefer has certain teams failing to sell tickets as well as failing to generate the necessary revenue to pay the players the salaries they "need" in order to play a game for a career.
Excuse me while I take this call :

Classic "you didn't build that" argument. It's garbage. So since the top 53% of income earners pay all the taxes and the bottom 47% don't pay any...why should they be able to take advantage of all for which the taxes paid? They complain about corporate loopholes, but the individuals are still paying far more than the takers who take more than give.

Sure. Let's just set up a non-profit where they all have equal salaries (a living wage maybe?). Let the league take over ownership and control of the resources and distribution there of. Perhaps they should control the draft as well and distribute players according to need. They could actually play for a knock off cup. Think what they could get by selling the actual one on eBay. Ever player and owner would be paid equally. All the teams would have equal records. But...don't expect the games to be too exciting. Don't expect records to be broken. Don't expect there to be any incentive to try harder. Sounds like a great league to me. Are you happy now, comrade?

Nobody is being exploited, as a human, you have a choice, nobody holds a gun to anyone's head to go to an NHL game. Also have a choice not to buy any NHL products. There is nothing unethical about selling a product for a price.

That's getting into politics. I'm only interested in how the NHL players and owners are somehow unethical.

I know, right? We should start a class action law suit. NHL fans against exploitation. Yeh, that's the ticket.

According to the premise offered above, anyone buying that bottle of scotch, is being exploited, because it could( and should) cost less.

Ethics is a branch of philosophy we could debate all day.

The point, as was already made, is that millionaires and billionaires are receiving taxpayer help with for-profit businesses when those same businesses already rely upon taxpayers to support them via tickets, parking, jerseys, etc. for their very existence.

Please, defend that.

You're talking about Income Taxes. Everybody pays one tax or another...or they are Jeremiah Johnson types living in the wilderness. The only reason some people don't pay any income tax is because they earn next to nothing.
