Pitlick, R+C Hamilton, and Jultz
- ChetManly

I hear you... All 3 are poop... Hamilton is done- Pitlick will be had for rock bottom as he remains unproven IMO... Better question is what do you now pay Jultz this summer??? Further- how does the GM look advertising "Norris potential" type proclamation to waivers/no contract??? Going to be an interesting summer for MacT-

Hossa would be tough bc of the recapture penalties. Hes 36 and has 3 years left on his contract. If a team is off the hook in case of early retirement (injuries too could force this) then im sure he would be worth trading for.
- DDM-Coga

Right, if you could 2 of those 3 years totally worth it. In that final year his salary's 1mil easy to bite the bullet on that.

Without Cap Geek its hard to tell how much those recapture penalties are. But since its a back loaded deal I think its a huge penalty if he retires early

It was a front loaded deal for Hossa.
Hossa will make $7.9 million each of the first seven years of the deal. However, for the 2016-17 season, his salary drops to $4 million. In 2017-18 and 2018-19, Hossa will make $1 million and in the final two years of the deal, he will make just $750,000 each year.

So which young player (s) are you not offering a contract to? Cause the cap for the Oilers during the losing years is tight as (frank)... I hate to see what cap they have when they start winning...
- saskoil21

If petry walks that's about 5 mil we'll save from what we should earmark.
If we can resign petry, I think that gives us some breathing room to play hardball with jultz if his demands are unreasonable

sorry youre right, meant front loaded since that want makes the recapture penalty so huge. And I was wrong, I hate NHLnumbers.com. Hossa has another 6 years left on his deal, ends in 2021 when he is 42

The basics are as such: When there's a difference between a player's actual salary and his cap hit, that difference goes into a pot that is then charged against the team's cap in the event he doesn't play out his full contract. The money is split evenly among all years remaining on the contract (much like AAV is calculated now)

If Hossa retired in 2015, the Blackhawks would have a $2,625,000 cap hit penalty from that year through 2021. If he retired in, say, 2018, after one year of his $1 million salary seasons, the Blackhawks would have $4,275,000 of dead cap space through 2021

And this is why you don't sign a 30 yr old player to a 12 yr contract.

So Sharp probably is going to get moved bc what team wants to take that gamble of trading for and then paying hossa almost 6m when he is 40 years and could have +4m in cap penalties if he retires early bc of poor play, injuries, passion is gone etc etc.

If it helps you get two cups and be a contender every year, and that's the kind of contract it takes,; then yeah u do.

Hossa was/still can be a beast and was integral to both their cups.
Cap troubles 6 years down the line are irrelevant in relation to what hes done for them.

And while Richards might not be quite as integral as Hossa has been, he was an important piece to round out their cup winning roster.

It's all about winning cups and building a perennial contender. Everything else is far less meaningful

The only person who might say no to an offer of a guy thats gonna help u get two cups, but will also contribute to serious cap issues 5 or 6 years down the line is the teams accountant.

Chicago's already had to gut their roster of depth (versteeg, bufuglien, ladd) after a championship once. And they still won another title a season later

Its a huge penalty for Chicago. Because they got the benefit of the front load. Which is why they will never risk trading him. Which is also why so many in Chicago wanted him given an amnesty buyout last year.

The cap is going to be at the 72m range next season from what Bettman was saying at the allstar game.

The UFA C market is weak too if im not mistaken, so if thats still a priority, maybe its worth the gamble now and deal with it in 1-2 seasons.

- DDM-Coga

They also said 72 range last year at this time and we ended up at 69. If the NHL doesn't see what's happening in the economy they are blind. I doubt there will be any uptick in the cap.

Yeah that is true, but I believe he said something if the Dollar still stays around the same that it is now, it would be 71.7m or just under 72m but you never know with that guy and the lip service he provides in his pressers

Yeah Sharp or Bickell one of them will for sure be moved, maybe even both of them. With Toews & Kane's new contracts kicking in that's 8.4mil added to their cap.
