I agree. They at least need a third line center and there has to be some question about Leon being ready next year. Worst case scenario, you sign Roy or Richards and they either play third line or you move them to the wing. Lot of centers play wing. It is an easier transition than going from wing to center as Hall showed us.

roy could probably be had for 2-3 mil max and short term.
Richards is at 5.75 for another half decade after this season. and isn't playing well.
worst case scenario for roy is we committed short term to a guy that lost his mojo.
worst case with Richards is far worse. like impede mact's ability to make all of those super obvious franchise changing moves you've mentioned that any good gm would've made. as well as resign kids wanting raises in the next few years.
but im sure youd still find a way to say coulda, woulda, shoulda, even when he has no more dollars left to spend on all the star free agents that are banging down our doors to sign here.

we don't even really consider Richards at present unless meaningfull salary goes the other way.
itd be nice to have him, but theres this new thing they got in the nhl. its called salary cap
