i do follow the logic there. but he wouldnt really get much time on the pens in that role anyway, for better or worse.
what i would need is the ability to cycle down low and chew up possession time when crosby and malkin arent on the ice. go out there and be able to kill a big penalty in the third.
and im not 100 percent sure he can/cant do those things anymore. - stayinthefnnet
I don't see a team willing to take that chance, unless the Kings eat a considerable amount of salary. I think you can count on Mike Richards once the playoff start.

Mike Richards is 29, Briere is 37. Brad Richards is still a capable player. Umberger had some injuries last season, and went to a new team. Many factors go into it, and it's different for every player. - MJL
It's not different when the baseline is skating. All of those guys have lost a step, and it shows.
Doesn't matter when you lose it. When it is gone, it's gone, and their games, as well as every other player who loses a step, all suffer
Look at Matt Read. Because he better have had a leg injury, otherwise his skating is nowhere near good enough for the role which he is being paid to play
Poor Skating can make guys look disinterested |

for his salary, id rather just take a stab at Ryan Oreilly when he hits FA. or Kesler. |

The baseline isn't skating with Richards, and his skating isn't gone. Richards struggling doesn't have anything to do with his skating in my opinion. When Briere was 29, Richards age, he was putting up big seasons. Big difference between 29 and 35-37. Even Lombardi thinks Richards still has the ability.

Pens will add somebody at the deadline. They shouldn't be risking taking on that contract.

We will continue to disagree until he goes somewhere else
But if Lombardi truly thought Richards could play, he wouldn't be eating that cap hit and trying to move him
What they say is far less important than what they do |

with the way the pens are currently constructed, no way in hell i would.
i do think the pens will be fairly limited in what they can do. they really dont have many picks yet.
the maatta/dupuis injuries really tied their hands. |

There's a difference between thinking he can still play, and having the player actually do it. Lombardi made a reference using baseball batting averages, that points out that he thinks Richards still has the ability to be a good player. The Kings want to do some things, and need to have some flexibility. Richards isn't playing up to the level of his cap hit, which is why they've done what they've done. They aren't eating any salary unless they send him to the AHL. If he clears waivers, they have 30 days to do that. |

it seems to me that the flyers have a terrible PK right now Richards is a force on the PK always has been...i don't think he is washed up or lost a step i think he is just not happy on the 3rd line....Richards would free up the ability to trade a center ( cause we have way to many right now) even if it just for a draft pick he would also help out the PK ... but the big question is can the flyers get him re-interested in the game...he never wanted to leave Philly maybe bringing him back might re-fire that spark in him...either way it would be nothing more than a gamble |

agreed. enjoyed him while he was here, scored some big goals and made big plays. it's over, done. even if the flyers had the room, i don't think he'd want to come here. and i have zero interest in the media bs poop storm that would ensue either. |

i don't listen to the weather reports because they're wrong about storms a lot of the time. just look out the (frank)ing window and worry about it then. |

In related news, if Richards is in the AHL next season, he may get to stay in California after all if he's in the Kings' system:
