It should, depending on what you think a decent return is.
His point was that you need to field an actual NHL defense next year. You can't just do a defense of Ghost-Morin, Hagg-Alt, Petterson-Manning next year because you want to have an environment to work them into the league not throw them to the wolves with no veterans.
Now, which of those veterans are kept is up for debate. But he wasn't saying keep Streit 100% no matter what. He simply said that he has value as a veteran on the team to hopefully help them improve. Right now, I'd love to have him around to help transition Ghost as first unit PP QB for the next 2 years. - jmatchett383
Problem is that Streit is not going to get you another d-man that is worth anything. Most likely on going to get a draft pick or two which is fine IMO. To me where the Flyers really messed up was when they traded Richards and Carter. A good d-man should have been aquired in one of those trades instead of a bunch of forwards. Yes we got a good return with Jake,Coots, and Simmonds but Pronger was not coming back and Kimmo was getting older. |

You're probably right, but we got Coburn for Alexei Zhitnik.....so...you also could be incredibly wrong.

I don't know why they aren't using akeson.... when he is up he gets such sheltered minutes on the 4th where he will never succeed lol - benjichronic
because much like gus and manning, akeson isnt a nhl player. so tired of hearing how these guys dont get a legit chance. If they were so good wouldnt you think an nhl team would make a trade for them? even a lousy 7th rd pick? yet no one is knocking on the door.
that being said I would rather see mannign than carlo at this point; just to see what he has. then again i think hextall has seen enough to realize mannign is an ahl cup of coffee guy and wont be in the top 6 on this or any other nhl team. |

We may not see eye to eye on some things, but this 100%.
If Akeson was an NHL-caliber player, he would have been picked up on waivers.
That said, he's a viable call-up, but the team probably knows what it has with him and wants to see what Straka can do. |

Didn't akeson lead the ohl or a minor league in scoring? I thought he was tearing it up? I've never particularly paid attention to Akeson but I thought he wasn't completely awful in the playoffs last year, and then because he's playing 4th line minutes in the COMPLETE wrong role, you can't gauge his skill at that point. regardless of whether he's an quality nhl player, I think we can all agree that a 4th line role is not for him... |

Streit is not going to be part of the future. He is a now player and this team has no chance now. I also didn't say a firesale is in order. To trade an aging d-man that is playing well for a decent return should seriously be considered. - Daveflyers36
Streit can be part of the next couple of future seasons. If someone wants to make an offer that I can't turn down, then fine, make the deal. Otherwise I'd keep him. Some fans think the Flyers should forget about trying to win in the next few seasons. I don't agree with that. |

He led the OHL in scoring as an over-ager, which is nothing crazy. He was a 21-year-old playing against teenagers.
He was good in the playoffs, but he was given a legit shot in the top-9 early in the season and fell flat on his face. That's why he was moved to the 4th line (yes, not the correct role). |

I agree. I love Streit and always have even before we acquired him, but he is having a great season and this may be the one time his value is this high. Hell he could get injured next season and not go back to same form, thats a risk of holding onto him. He's primarily been healthy guy his career, but you never know in this league. However, i only would move him if the deal is right for us. Not just for the heck of it to move him because he isn't part of the future. Having said all of this, this trade scenario would be much easier and clearer if Kimmo was actually playing or if his future had better idea if he is playing again or not. Aside from Streit tho, i think we should try to move Del Zotto, Schultz, Coburn, Grossman. I'd add Amac but that just seems unrealistic to actually trade him with that contract. And if we don't trade Del Zotto or Schultz, extend them for short term. Del Zotto has stated he wants to come back and Schultz has been consistent for us and was a nice signing by Hexy. Plus he would be good vet for our young guys. - arichardson22
The notion that the Flyers should try and trade pretty much their entire defense, is a bad idea. |

I think he'll amount to a very good AHL player who can fill-in for short spurts in the NHL.
Think of a forward version of Danny Syvret. |

Which defenseman do you think they could/should have gotten in the Columbus or LA trades? Doughty was likely untouchable, and Jack Johnson is atrocious defensively. Who else was there? |

Hextall should pick up the phone and listen to offers for any player, and see what's out there. A firesale though is not a good idea. I think there is a possibility of a lot of disapointed fans after the deadline. Proabably a number of fans calling for Hextall's head also. |

Agreed. I never liked the contract Streit was given but I admit, he has played well enough to earn it on most nights so far.
But he is 37 and there is evidence to show that a players skills diminish through age or injury as he gets older. Just look at, well, everyone.
Sell high. His stock probably won't be any higher now so it'd be a great time for Hexy to entertain any offers that cross his desk. |

Akeson and Jones, yes. Andrew Gordon is an AHL journeymen who has far to much responsibility on the Phantoms. I've never considered him for a call-up. Blair Jones is the better AHL/NHL tweener.
Cousins I could see getting called up if we had an opening at center in the top9, which is damn near impossible with all of the versatility we have of guys that can play multiple forward positions. Leier, IMO, is probably last on this pecking order. Hes still developing his game as a pro, definitely behind guys like Cousins and Straka.
While Straka may have been one of a few who were available on short notice, I also think the Flyers see an opportunity to start assessing the farm. Wouldnt be surprised if guys like Cousins or Leier also get cups of coffee as the season closes out, especially if we continue to lose. - mochoson
The one thing I didn't like watching the phantoms game the other night was Leier was not out there killing penalties at all. Akeson and even Gordon were the pk guys. Leier projects as a bottom 6 forward in the league going forward. Why wouldn't terry Murray have him out there working on the pk? |
