Agreed. I never liked the contract Streit was given but I admit, he has played well enough to earn it on most nights so far.
But he is 37 and there is evidence to show that a players skills diminish through age or injury as he gets older. Just look at, well, everyone.
Sell high. His stock probably won't be any higher now so it'd be a great time for Hexy to entertain any offers that cross his desk. - 77rams
I think he has value to the team if for nothing else than a calm, veteran dman to help Ghost and the rest of the young D over the next 2 years as they transition to the NHL.
I'd move him, but not just to dump him for the best offer. |

Hextall should pick up the phone and listen to offers for any player, and see what's out there. A firesale though is not a good idea. I think there is a possibility of a lot of disapointed fans after the deadline. Proabably a number of fans calling for Hextall's head also. - MJL
I would be dissapointed if he can't get at least our 2nd pick back.
I would also be dissapointed if there was an offer for a 1st in return for Coburn that he didn't take. |

There is also evidence of a lot of players continuing to play at a high level, into their late 30's. Streit hasn't had the same amount of wear and tear and tough minutes that a player like Timonen has had. Streit also hasn't played a high number of NHL games for a player his age. He's a top scoring defenseman at 37. I wouldn't expect a big dropoff in the next couple of years. |

We may not see eye to eye on some things, but this 100%.
If Akeson was an NHL-caliber player, he would have been picked up on waivers.
That said, he's a viable call-up, but the team probably knows what it has with him and wants to see what Straka can do. - jmatchett383
yes he is a cup of coffee guy for a game or 2. agree with the straka thigns as well. though if it is only a game that doesnt make much sense imo. |

The one thing I didn't like watching the phantoms game the other night was Leier was not out there killing penalties at all. Akeson and even Gordon were the pk guys. Leier projects as a bottom 6 forward in the league going forward. Why wouldn't terry Murray have him out there working on the pk? - Just5
AHL and NHL roles are different. Maybe the Phantoms don't feel that he's ready for PK duties yet, but he will grow into it. |

I think they see Straka the way they saw Lauridsen a few years back. A guy who's more or less a finished product and has a (very small) window to impress. |

Streit is not going into his late 30's, he is already there. |

The sentence in my post that you quoted that stated that Streit is a top scoring defenseman at 37, didn't illustrate that I'm aware that he is in his late 30's? |

Which defenseman do you think they could/should have gotten in the Columbus or LA trades? Doughty was likely untouchable, and Jack Johnson is atrocious defensively. Who else was there? - jmatchett383
Who said the trades had to be with Colombus or LA. Were they the only teams interested? And I was wrong earlier, Pronger was hurt after the trades but even still, both Pronger and Kimmo were getting up their in age. A trade to team that would have given up a good d-man should have been in the cards. Problem was that Holmgren wanted to clear cap space so he could overpay for a lunatic goaltender. |

He'd be fine to add as veteran depth if he wasn't making so much money for such a long period of time.
He's basically been Wade Redden'd without the benefit of losing the cap hit. |

The notion that the Flyers should try and trade pretty much their entire defense, is a bad idea. - MJL
Just bc i say try to trade them, doesn't literally mean trade them all. It means explore options and see which few of that group gets a good return. Should have expanded more but did not mean trade them all before this deadline |

Even if he got a defenseman in the deal, how would that have changed the cap situation? A good D man likely would've been well paid, even possibly paid more then the players the Flyers did acquire in the deals. Again, Holmgren can't force a team to trade them a quality D man. Perhaps he tried to get a defenseman, but couldn't find a team willing to trade one. Is that a possibility? |

because much like gus and manning, akeson isnt a nhl player. so tired of hearing how these guys dont get a legit chance. If they were so good wouldnt you think an nhl team would make a trade for them? even a lousy 7th rd pick? yet no one is knocking on the door. - rinaldo
Mark Giordano once had to go to the KHL b/c the Flames didn't think he was worth anything more than a QO and no other teams thought enough of him to trade for his rights.
Martin St. Louis was exposed in the 2000 expansion draft (at the same age as Arty) and neither Columbus nor Minnesota thought he was worth picking up for free.
NHL execs/scouts don't always get is right as a group. So many players fall through the cracks year after year... some get a second crack at it (like Gio and Marty) and never look back... most others are lost forever. |

giving him 1 game to imrpess isnt much of a chance. if they give him a somewhat extended look great. no issue with that at all. |
