That's not true he drives the net very well and uses his size to protect the puck. He isn't a physical player but he is the only guy we have who can play a power game. Reminds me of a very defensively responsible David Booth with better finish - bezz44
He doesn't drive the net. Guy gets way to much credit because he's big. Even though he doesn't use it

I don't know how you haven't seen him lately driving the net, making power moves. I was previously unimpressed with the way he used his size but just before he left with the concussion he started using his size offensively and since then (minus the period where he was not very good post-concussion) I have seen him pretty consistently make drives to the net when he carries the puck in. Still doesn't hit but I think he gives us something we don't have. I'll find a clip for you to show you what I am talking about if you haven't seen him do it

This was the best example I could find because most of the times I have seen him drive the net he hasn't scored. Also scrolling through the youtube clips it is insane how many breakaways this guy has had this year.

This was pretty concussion when he did it for 2 weeks. At his age we r seeing the player he is. No reason why he doesn't do it every night. Burrows drives the net 10 times harder.

I think we must just be watching different players because I have seen him use his size on offense pretty consistently. Agree to disagree I guess

I think he does it more than most of our forwards, but I agree that he gets way too much love or lack of criticism. There's a reason why this guy(outside of 1 season) could never crack the Florida Panthers top 6 and was on their 4th line when we traded for him. He also lacks any sort of mean streak and doesn't seem to play with the same intensity as guys in the bottom 6 like Burrows/Dorsett/Kennins.
Where I've liked him best is on the PK, outside of his hot streak he's been pretty mediocre at 5v5. Which is pretty useful for even a good team if you give him 4th line minutes.

He reminds me of Penner sans scoring touch.
He's the guy I'd trade at the deadline. So team wanting size for their bottom 6. Higgins and Mathias for Matt pelech and 2nd in '16

That was AV's biggest failure. Once the PP dried up and they saw how the officials were calling the series they should have started giving it right back to Boston. - CubanBuffet
I don't agree; because then you're just playing their game and you lose because we weren't that kind of team.
What AV should have done in game 7 is grabbed a stick and put a white towel on it and waved it around. Then he would have got kicked out of the game for unsportsmanlike conduct and the team would have been so inspired they would have stormed back and beat Boston by pure skill and determination. Then AV would have had a bronze statue put outside of Rogers Arena with him waving that stick with the towel and all of Vancouver would live happily ever after.

He is what he is IMO. Excellent penalty killer and defensive player who can score the odd goal. If we got significantly more for him at the deadline then I'd be fine with moving him but otherwise I would rather keep him and Hansen out of our tweeners. Still only 26 y/o

You mentioned earlier you wanted to sign Hagelin in the offseason. One of him or Zuccarello would be perfect. Burrows, Bieksa, Higgins, Kassian out. Hagelin/Zucc, Corrado, Jensen in
Higgins is still on top of my list. Assuming Burrows won't waive then Matthias would be #2 for me. - Nucker101
You know burrows in overpaid, but losing him leaves a huge hole. He hustles, hits and goes to the net. I'm fine with moving Higgins, just think somebody will overpay for mathias

IMO if we jeep one, I'd rather it be richardson - Bieksa#3
Ya I hear you I am just wondering on Richardson frequent injuries it appears. Matthias is less of an option than Richardson but seems to be healthier most of the time?
