McDavid may turn out to be just as good as Seguin though. He is not going to be Gretzky or Lemieux.
- Champ

But he might be the equivalent of a perfectly healthy 18 yr old Crosby. Nobody's moving that pick. But as to Aeth's hypothetical ....ya, I do it without a second thought.

a generation in hockey is about 10 years. it's the turnover from one group of stars to the next. and a generational player can apply to any player who will become the face of the game. that's really what it means, more than "best in the last 20-30 years"
- DoubleDown

Alright, I can agree with that.....but maybe closer to 15 years as one previous poster stated.

Yeah, there's no need to get all semantic about it. It means a player who's considerably better than his peers. Someone who can put up 100pts in his rookie season and eventually win the Art Ross by 20 points. IE, not Jonathan Toews (great player, but not a generational talent).

- 1979AD

IMO I would take Toews on my team before Crosby.

Mcdavid should be better than Seguin. He is destroyin what Seguin did in junior. He may not be better, but his potential is higher than Sequins was at the same age.

Exactly! Gretzky and Lemieux were historical type players.
- Champ

recent generational talents i can think of...

Lemieux
Lindros
Crosby

those were guy where it was no question that they would be the best in the game... though in Lemiuex's case it was obviously different since Gretzky was, as you said, in the midst of the greatest career the league gas ever seen.

How about Stamkos, Hedman for McDavid and Myers.

You're not alone. That decision wouldn't be based on talent though.

I might hesitate at the 2016 first, because by trading all those assets, the 2016 first might be in the top 3-4 spot again even if McDavid were to light it up as a 19 year old in his first year. but other than that, I would do it. If the hype turns out to be real, he would be a magnet for top end UFa's thus making it easier to fill out the supporting cast.

The comparison most often used by scouts is Crosby. In fact much of the commentary was that he's ahead of where Crosby was at 17 - mostly b/c he's already one of the best skaters in the world.

However, as awesome as Sid was at 17/18 he made himself even better over the next handful of years. Does McDavid have the same drive to be the best?

Meh, not a very good comparison. Crosby is no Gretzky.

No one.
After this draft......all other drafts will fail to compare.

Until the next generational talent 6 years downt the road.

Buffalo can win, because McDavid will just pull a Lindros and demand a trade to the beloved blue and white

It will be a sad sad day /ifwhen that sack of crap city gets McDavid.

They simply do not deserve him.

It will also mean another 10 years of the leafs losing to the sabres.

Austin Matthews is the consensus number 1. Don't know much about him.
