Ryan, I know you aren't a fan of answering stuff here, but I want to ask.
Should E Kane have surgery, would he then become a prime target for the Penguins to try and acquire around the Draft? At that time we will know most likely our cap situation for the next season, including the question marks on Martin, Ehrhoff, and Dupuis. - Guile
I can't imagine that the Kane thing has any other outcome then him getting the surgery and taking the rest of the season off, and being traded this summer.
It will hurt the Jets this year, but at the draft, they will be able to get the best return. |

I really like Bergenheim. He has some past history of success in the playoffs as well. And I would do Spaling in a heartbeat. At the end of the day Bergenheim can provide offense for other, score goals, and is fairly gritty. No brainer improvement.
I said on the last blog the other option I really like.... Sutter + a pick for Petry and Pakarinen
Then we could trade a D-man like Bortuzzo for Winnik because we'll have the cap space. Or conversely, maybe have enough D depth to trade Martin/Ehrhoff for a bigger fish at that point. But just for example..
Perron-Sid-Horny
Kunitz-Malkin-Bennett
Comeau-Winnik-Downie
Spaling-Lappy-Pakarinen
Letang-Martin
Petry-Ehrhoff

Pens would be wise to pickup Winnik. His hero chart is better than Kessel's. He has hands of stone, but he consistently skates the puck into the zone and has decent vision. He's a lunchbox type guy - one of only a small handful of Leafs who work their sack off every game. Cap hit is nothing and the price would be reasonable. |

We will trade or publicly execute Sutter. So all will be good, happy?
I don't see us signing a free agent Dman honestly. Next season should return Letang, Maatta, Despres, Scuds, and Bortuzzo. If we are not confident enough in having 2 of our 3 "good" rookie Dmen playing next season (I don't think Bort will be up all the time), then we are a failure of an organization with those draft picks.
So, now we got 10 million to resign Bennett (if he even is still here), Downie and Comeau should be around 3 million combined like you said. But now we have 6 mil to keep Berg and Winnik (or whoever is or might have been obtained). Lets say we only keep Winnik. With the possible cap increase, that should bump us to over 5 mil.... and now we can land E Kane ^_^
But yeah, you were pretty spot on for most in how I am viewing this. - Guile
poop, I forgot about Maatta.. I agree then we most likely won't sign a D. Probably just retain Bortz for cheap.
I also like how you think there at the end

I must say i like the sounds of that lineup. I do like Petry also. Although, I'd probably put Comeau over Bennet on the second line until Beau shows improvement. |

Well, in that scenario, depending on the Cap increase, we would have between 4 mil (no cap increase) to lets say... 7.5 mil (3.5 mil increase). I don't see a 5 mil increase next year since there has been too much hype over near no increase. I don't believe in no increase, but I will assume it won't be a 5 mil+ based on that. |

That's too late, if we don't win the Cup this season or at least make the Final, this team will be totally destroyed, and I think that will include Malkin leaving town. - nbartley9
Can't really see Malkin being shipped. It's our bottom 6 problem, not Geno. |

I'm guessing a 3rd would do it. Depending on what other teams would be willing to offer, maybe a 3rd and a B level prospect. |

If it does or doesn't increase, we could always have WPG retain some of his salary if we sweeten the deal. Adams will be gone so that is another ~million free. Maybe scuds gets shipped out but I don't think he will IMO |

We shipped our 3rd for Goc
Maybe Dumoulin/Harrington +? Not sure of Toronto's status of the blue line especially with blue chip prospects, but you can never have to many right? |

I don't see Bennett in the top 6, especially with Comeau near returning and Beau in a HORRID slump. More likely he gets packaged in one of the trades if they occur. - Guile
Might be part of why he's been a healthy. Don't want Bruce Willis to break Mr glass before a move |

How about a 2016 2nd + Scuderi for Winnik ? |

Damn it, I hate agreeing with bartley... but he's right imo.
only caveat is if they go after someone like tlusty first and then get either of the two mentioned...
But if they are going to trade sutter then a bigger name should be coming back... I'm not saying 1 for 1 but something along the lines of the kane deal mentioned yesterday... - nh4442
What is Sutter's worth these days? His value has to be at an all time low. He's flat out terrible. If any acquiring team uses "fancy stats" good luck getting anything back for him.
I'd trade Spaling and Sutter (if anybody is dumb enough to take their contracts) for any UFA's and not think twice. Just get those lousy contracts off the books for next year and find better options in FA.
Yes on Winnik (actually thought he would have been a nice target in the summer). Yes on Bergy.

Frees up space to make another move.. but we NEED draft picks next year. On the fence here..
Edit: I don't do it. Scuderi hasn't been that bad at all. He just carries a contract about a million over what he should make. Keep him this year we need our D. Off season move him to a team that could use him. Most likely won't happen though. |

I know one thing, with all the trading of our drafts picks year after year this franchise is in for some dark days ahead. Book it. |

I've been preaching this for weeks. I love the way these two play the game and I believe they can be a big upgrade to our bottom six.
If Toronto trades Santorelli I would love to offer up Sutter for Winnik+picks and then trade a prospect to Florida for Bergy. |
|
|
|
Btw... is Berg even playing with Florida? Or was he one of the players scratched recently? |

We've gone through the first wave of it already (bottom six last year), and will pay for this in a couple more years.

Really it depends on if we can keep players we trade for. Shero had almost all rentals, right now, we have the main trade target, Perron, for another year and so far hes reported as being quite happy here.
Goc might end up being chalked up as a draft pick overpay/loss. But aside from that... JR hasn't wasted draft picks. Plus, hes got an extra one from the Klink deal (5th rounder I believe?). |

Not likely. They have pieces to ship out and a solid core to work with. They aren't in Chicago LA territory but they are better than most think. |

The draft pick in the Klink deal isn't happening. It was conditional on Samuelsson playing 40 games for the Coyotes, and that isn't happening. |
