We need to lose this game not score and play well and maybe win.............. PISS OFF - SABRES 89
I still feel good about us finishing last.
And I want Nyi to drop as far as possible. Its tough to imagine them missing the playoffs (unless Florida goes on a tear), but I could see them potentially dropping to 7th or 8th
The father they drop, the better our pick |

long post warning:
I am a sabres fan and I like to think I fairly level headed when it comes to getting to high or low on players in the organization. As far as Myers is concerned I'll throw my 2 cents in: I do like Myers as a player but I think he is somewhere between where fans and haters are. I think on a good team he is a high end second pairing defensemen, on a poor team he is an average to above average 1st pairing d-man. On a team like Anaheim, Chicago, LA he would be an ideal 2nd pairing that can step and give you solid minutes, play pk and 2nd pp. If you have injuries he can also move up in the lineup. The flexibility he offers is a selling point for those teams. I think he is miscast on Buffalo and as fans we set the bar so high with his size and winning the calder that it will be impossible to ever come close to what as fans we wish he was. That doesn't mean that he also has no value to other teams. Now a lot of these teams think that Myers can be something more than he is now which is why I think that Buffalo should trade him. I don't think at this point in his career his value will be any higher (it actually helps that hes on he worst team in the NHL bc all these good teams think that with a better surrounding cast he will raise his level of play and be a Norris winning D-man). Last year I remember Steve Ott being on a morning show and saying he did not feel he knew himself as a player and felt comfortable in the NHL until he played 250 games. After that he became comfortable in his role and trusted his skills to carry him in the league. As of now Myers is at 363 games and to me Myers is as good as he will ever be. As I stated above he is an above average 2nd pairing d-man. As for the "he might be a late bloomer argument" I looked back to the last late bloomer that the Buffalo had (that I could recall of significance) which was Brian Campbell. Campbell did not become a NHL regular until he was 25-26 in the 05-06 season, until that point he was back and forth to the minors but had only played 167 NHL games prior to that season. During that season he played 79 games (which adds to 246 NHL games, supporting the 250 games theory) until that point he had 21 career goals, 32 assists, -34 +/-. Now this season Myers turns 25 and has long surpassed the 250(363 games for Myers) game threshold, his current career stats 44g 106a -32 +/-. So my point is that if we were going to see a jump in Myers play to an unforeseen Norris level it would have happened a hundred games ago or certainly this season by age 25. The Campbell and Myers comparison is where I think the sweet spot of his value probably is to the market. The positives are that he is under contract and teams still think he has room to grow, which would raise his value. When the Sabres traded Campbell to the Sharks he was a UFA and we got a #1(Ennis #22 overall) and Bernier (1st round pick 160 total NHL games to that point). So a return of a #1 pick, a prospect with NHL time(under 150-200 games) and younger prospect (not in NHL) can be reasonable. I am not one for throwing names in a hat and I don't know other teams prospects or players as well as other people might, i"ll leave that for all the other posters. Its of my opinion that one way or the other people over value and under value his worth on the market and if another team thinks they can get him to another level then squeeze that team for all you can and say adios. To the people saying that we have no one to replace Myers, second pairing d-men are much easier to come by and always seem to be available at the trade deadline or as UFA. C.Franson being one just this year, we also have Pysk and Mccabe which I think both are perfectly suited to Replace Myers within the next 2 years. I mean R.Scuderi has won 2 cups and has been coveted at the trade deadline twice...anyways just my 2cents sorry for the length but I wanted my fully formed hypothesis to be conveyed. - knarf55

How so?
Trading Myers would leave a MAJOR hole on our defense. Getting a solid, young defenseman back as part of the package makes total sense...
As long as the rest of the package (presumably a top prospect or young NHLer) is good enough to justify the swap of defensemen - jdfitz77
Exactly. I get it if a forward is coming back- not a third liner thar we already have by the ton. Devils advocate might say murray reaaaly doesn't like myers game, but it certainly sounds like fowler would be more of the exact same. |
