It will. To be honest the probability of minimal or stagnant cap growth is a factor, too. There's 5 contracts I especially dislike, and I wonder if any can be moved. - Jsaquella

Ha! Cute
But I really do think Grossmann could get moved -- I have taken a spin around the league the last few weeks, and man, Calgary's defense is SMALL. I mean, Deryk Engelland is the biggest player they have, at 6-2, 215.
That doesn't mean it has to be Grossmann -- but man, a team like the Flames might actually need SOMEBODY with size, even if he's the 7th man |

More food for thought,
On this day last year, The Flyers were coming off of a 2-1 win over Calgary, and had a 56.5% of making the playoffs.
They had 6 more games played, and they only had room to lose 22 points for the remainder of their games. That would've been a record of 11-10-2.
The Flyers could go 6-0-0 over their next 6 games to have the same number of points with the same number of games played as last year. This would mean they would have a 7 game win streak. Their longest win streak of the season is 4. Their next 6 games are (in order), Montreal (2nd East), Columbus (13th East), Buffalo (16th East), Columbus, Buffalo, and Nashville (1st West).
The best case scenario would be to hope for a win or overtime against Montreal, gain momentum from the Columbus/Buffalo stretch of games, and use it to compete against Nashville. 4-2 is a realistic expectation for this stretch.
Not to be dramatic, but this could be the most important stretch of games of the rest of the season. |

Man, I hear you, and I TRULY want to believe, but that is gonna be hella tough -- the teams this year who are in the playoff hunt are simply playing better than the teams were last year
December and the PK really (frank)ed this team/season |

Luckily, recently the Flyers have been beating (or really competing) with playoff teams, while beating the teams they should be beating. |

I guess I'm going to have to see teams not take guys before I believe one year is going to stop them. I understand some teams won't buy, but there are some teams that never buy
I mean, JFC. Calgary hasn't made the playoffs since 2007-08. You'd better get your asses into the playoffs if you have the chance, because with the way the West is, you might be getting curb-stomped by this time next year

exactly.
i understand how for some organizations, it may be better to not force it just to be an 8 seed and get ran over by a 1 or a 2 seed in the playoffs. (even though in hockey, truly anything can happen)
but for some, i think they really just need the fresh air that even getting in for a (frank)ing change could bring. |

I mean, seriously. Look at the Blues. Is somebody seriously telling me that they plan on getting pistol-whipped by the Blackhawks again just because of one year extra on some guy's contract?
Are the Islanders REALLY going to let that PK get strafed and risk losing Johnny Boychuck for nothing, just because of one year extra on some guy's contract?
Again: I have to see that to believe it

I am still genuinely entertained by this team. I actually even like many of them.
They just don't have enough talented players. They are the definition of mediocre and middle of the road.
But I still get to watch Claude Giroux. And Jake Voracek. And the Wayne Train.
And maybe our young guys will eventually grow into something. |

It'll be interesting watching the 'Hexy Plan' develop (successfully, I hope) over the next couple of seasons.
I'm definitely curious to see him stock the system.

Ha! Again, it doesn't have to be Grossmann, but come on.
I'm not saying it's gonna be the Wild West on March 2 -- it's actually been pretty quiet the last few TDLs
But I'll just have to see it to believe it that a team like Calgary just says, "(frank) it, we're not gonna do anything and just take our chances of getting caught from behind by the Kings" |

People can mock me, but I want them to win every single time they play, even if/when they miss
I know they won't, and if Mason's gone, that's likely the kill shot
It's not ego, though. I honestly believe that losing does absolutely no good for this particular team, because that will mean young players will not have progressed enough to matter |

And I'm sorry, but I like watching MDZ play like a difference-maker and I want Laughton to click with linemates and I want Couturier and Baby Schenn to find ways to put up points at ES, somewhat consistently
I watched Edmonton-Toronto on Saturday. We don't want to be that. We really don't
Some of us think we do, but you don't want to be a team with no hope, in a capped league where few trades are made |

I've said from the beginning that Mason was one of the 3 players the Flyers can ill afford to be without for an extended period of time.
The other two are G and Jake.
Without those 3 players, they are in the McDavid sweepstakes.
I don't think Claude Giroux has it in him to just tank. I laugh at the people that don't think he's a good captain. He's twice the captain that Mike Richards was, IMO.
And I liked Mike Richards. |
