Yeah, but Giroux does get his nose dirty. He's more Bobby Clarke than Richards was! - Jsaquella

Mike Modano, Daniel Alfredsson, Adam Foote and Jerome Iglina I kinda feel bought a little shape to their legacy by moving to another team. I would be heart broken if we lost Claude Giroux at any point within his career. - SuperSchennBros
just my opinion of course, but I didn't like seeing those players you mention change teams
Giroux of course would hurt bad
I feel the same about Simmonds too
the day frick and frack were both traded had my head spinning |

Yeah respecting the hard working gritty grinder is fine, but celebrating him while booing the franchise guy or future HOFer is moronic. - Jsaquella
exactly. they dont need to be mutually exclusive ideals. |

Can you imagine if they did pick Sanguinetti and how (frank)ed up this franchise would be? - johndewar
I read somewhere that they had Claude as the 13th guy on their list. Jeff Marek said that he heard they tried to move up for Trevor Lewis at one point |

Nuts, isn't it?
If Gerry Melnyk hadn't lost his poop in 1969, Bud Poile might not take Bobby Clarke because he already had Bob Currier in round one.
If the Nordiques hadn't traded Lindros twice, the Flyers might have had their first rounder in 1993 and took Saku Koivu, Todd Bertuzzi or Adam Deadmarsh. |

we probably would have had stamkos or tavares which would have been nice since they're better than giroux |

Now I realize this most likely won't happen , but would you trade straight across Brayden Coburn for James vanRiemsdyk? |

No they aren't ...that is why you are a fraud Flyers fan! Just look at stats over the past seasons and you proven wrong! Stamkos and Tavares score more goals for sure ... but otherwise ...nope ... I would take giroux over Tavares any day ...but Stamkos yeah I might do! He isn't much really a better all around player though! |

I get it, for the $ he gets people want 40 points, & solid D.
But I like his steadiness in the defensive zone, & I believe his turnovers are the least among our D men.
I know he had a bad penalty today, but that was hauling down the games best power forward.
Would I like to see his salary down a million? Sure, absolutely.
But I think he's - puckhead17[played very well, and MDZ has played great!
Dead on. Yes, he is overpaid, but the focus is all on the overpayment rather then on the player. He's a pretty good all around defensman.

It's his contract. He's done well in his current role-handling secondary minutes and not being over exposed. The trouble is, he's getting paid to be one of the leaders of the defense-you don't make that kind of financial and term commitment to a guy to be a secondary guy.
That's the biggest issue with the Flyers defense, as a whole. They have 8 legitimate NHL defensemen. All of them are capable NHLers. But most of them are being paid a premium for what they bring to the table. In some cases, they are overpaid for what they bring to the table. If MacDonald was making $3mm a year, on a 3 or 4 year deal, I doubt anyone would have much issue with him.
It's not really MacDonald, it's just that he's the most egregious example of the Flyers paying a premium for guys who are second tier defensemen. - Jsaquella
A big problem is the fans expectation of what players should be paid, and the above is a classic example. You aren't going to get a quality defensman like MacDonald on the UFA market for 3M a year. Now MacDonald's solid overall play, is being downplayed by calling it a secondary role. He's averaging 20 minutes a game, and playing against players such as Ovechkin, Kane, and Yandle recently. No problem with looking at the overall makeup and cost of the defense. That can be done while also acknowledging that a player like MacDonald is a pretty good defenseman.
