Well, you can't say factually it's a bad deal because it's totally based on perception. To me, giving up what they did for Boychuk, coupled with the results they've had and his value to the team, I say it's a good deal. - jmatchett383
If they re-sign him, it was a good deal. If he walks after one season, I'd say it's a bad deal. |

Again, it's a bad deal to you. To me, it was a good deal and worth the risk even if he walks. I'm sure they'd prefer to resign him, but that's just icing on the cake, to me. |

This is a fan-by-fan perception. Just because your perception is different is irrelevant to how he feels. - jmatchett383
Watch how attendance drops off. That's not a pass. |

No they don't. - MJL
They sure as hell do. Esp for fans like me, who appreciate the fact it's the only championship philly has since I've walked The Earth.

If your team sucks in later years, the outlook changes. Phillies are a perfect example. - MJL
But the phillies didn't really suck after the championship. They could have helped themselves by shedding some vets like Utley, Howard and Rollins earlier but they were still playing well. |

Oh, I'm not saying they'll be happy he walks, but I think many if not most would find it justifiable. There would be some outcry, but the empty can rattles the loudest. - BulliesPhan87
Absolutely.
Using the LA example, I'm sure they'd prefer to be running away with the West with Richards playing 2C and putting up 75 points. That doesn't change the fact that those guys won 2 Cups with the team. |

what happened to Mason? - Davey_Crockett
His third new injury within a month. Not at all related to the initial injury. |

Why should I, as a fan, care about their attendance since I already got what I wanted out of the team?
I HOPE ticket sales (and prices) drop so I can take my family to more games for less money. |

Not immediately, nothing lasts forever. Attendance will show that they haven't been given a 10 year pass. |

Attendance will show a far bigger sample size of what the fans think then what a few posters here on Hockeybuzz think. |

Fans aren't mad at the phillies cause they have sucked, fans are mad at phillies because they haven't made any changes to get better. Most fans saw that the team needed a rebuild yet was trotted out as is the past few seasons just to try and sell tickets. If Rubin started the rebuild two years ago and the team had sucked, there wouldn't be as much backlash as there is now having watched a slow and painful decline without any progression for the future.
If the Flyers trot out this same team over the next couple of seasons without progression, the fans will turn on them too. Some have already. |

That's fantastic. If you asked most of those disappearing fans if they'd prefer to have 5 great years and a World Series championship compared to above-average baseball right now but no 2008 championship, what do you think most would prefer? |

That's a different conversation and is really getting away from the actual subject of if Boychuck walks, was it a bad deal or not. You and I have a difference of opinion on that. |

Really?
Would they? Or would they be excited that they get a parade and the cup? - J35Bacher
Two different things.
Yes, they'd be happy about the Cup.
However, a team is an ongoing business and once the hangover wears off they'd be dealing with the reality of a player that walked and would probably not be happy about it. |

The issue with the Phillies is they took the good will from 2006-2011 and squandered it. If you eliminate the hope of the fans they get turned off. The losing isn't the biggest reason the attendance is down, it's that fans don't see much hope of it getting better soon. |

So your stance is the deal for Boychuk would be bad if he walks this year even if they win a cup this year? |

No, you brought up the Phillies and their recent play, as well as the Kings, as an argument to whether or not bad current play is forgiveable following a championship, so you brought up the difference in conversation (or at least the specified examples).
As for Boychuk, like I said, it's a fan-by-fan perception, and we simply differ on it. |

They are, no fan is ever going to become unhappy that their team won a championship in a past season, because the team is currently not playing well. That does not constitute a pass for the team. |

This is true, but they're not directly related (to me).
All I want from the Flyers is 1 Cup before I die. If they give me that, they get a pass from me for forever. I'd prefer they continue to play well every year and win multiple Cups, but I'd be content with one. |

You tried to eliminate the championship from the equation as if it never existed. Which was not part of the premise I brought up. |

They're going to have to really overpay anyway! If he walks how is giving up 2 2nd round picks and a conditional 3rd round pick for one season a good deal?
The Isles essentially did the same thing with Boychuck that the Flyers did with MacDonald. - MJL
I'm not going to debate the talent discrepancy between the two with you, but I think the Isles have a chance to re-sign him because of familiarity. If the Isles were still wallowing in the bottom of the conference, he likely would have needed a drastic overpayment to consider them. Instead, they've shown they can win with him and they have a young nucleus as well.
I think he'll strongly consider them if they match any other offer or exceed it. I don't think that would have been the case had they not traded for him and had success.
Top pairing defenseman are worth their weight in gold. I'd be ok with my team overpaying for one. |
