It's not the medical staff as much as the team not handling the situation well. Mason had two prior injuries with no relation to the current injury. Each time he came back healthy and pain free. Berube started him in almost every game he was available. All of this despite the fact that the team has been out of the playoff race for weeks.
- PhillySportsGuy

If a coach is told a player is available, why not put him in the lineup, and play your #1 goalie as much as possible? Mason wasn't playing more then the majority of #1 goalies are playing. If a player is supposed to have his work load reduced, that's on the GM and the Medical staff to determine and put those limitations on a player, and relay that information to the coaching staff. If there is anyone to be blamed here, it's not Berube.

Per Dave Strehle, Stolarz might wear 65, not 79

Ok it's time for Mr Hextall to shut down Mason.
It's time for Hextall to realize we are not a playoff team. We had a 3% chance of making playoffs with Mason, have to think we are at a 1% chance now.
It's time to contact ALL the playoff/bubble teams that either need help or are hit with injuries...especially on the blue-line
Let's walk away at the end of the season with a couple of first round picks ( hopefully one will be a lottery) and a additional 3rd or possibly a 2nd. Who knows maybe Kimmo comes back and wishes to be moved.. There is another pick

There is no reason he shouldnt be able to gain some quality picks and clear some cap

At least then we would have some type of a positive year

- 3flyerkids

I don't think Mr. Hextall can do that. Once he's cleared by doctors, he's on the roster and counts against the cap. It's on Mr. Berube not to play him.

the coach's job is to win every game

he's not there to plan for the next three years or get a higher draft pick

I blame the organization as a whole for forcing players like Mason and Read through injuries when they need to rest or have surgery.

Mason is the second most important player on this team moving forward. I don't understand how they can continue to play him when he's in pain and they don't even know what from.

I'm assuming Rinaldo is the most important?

Can he adequately fill the skates of one Mr. Petr Straka, Jamie Fritsch, and the 03/04 version of Randy Jones?

One point that I think needs to be made, just as you have final say what happens when you visit your Doctor, so does a player. If a player is given an option of rest and rehab, or surgery, the team can certainly try and influence that player, and tell him what they think the best way to go, but ultimately, what happens is up to the player.

Not saying this is the case with the Mason situation, but just something to consider.

Correct. It's on the players on the team to intentionally lose games so that the Flyers get a higher pick.

I ask this seriously.

They weren't forced but the team should have been proactive in shutting them down for a while. It seems like they never take a precautionary approach to any injury

probably so
especially now in retrospect with Mason

medicine really is not an exact science

they may not know exactly what is wrong with his knee, even with advanced technology like mri

probably after the arthroscopy it will come out that he has a partial tear of a ligament or meniscus

Perhaps Berube feels the best chance for him to be back behind the bench next year is to finish with as many points as he can.
