For the record, the 04 sharks have the record for the most points made up to make the playoffs. They were down 9 points with 29 games left and made it.
It could happen. |

5-0-2 in their last seven, splitting points with the conference leader and the other division leader
Only in Philadelphia is that viewed as failure, with 28 games left in the season
Guess they should stop playing the (frank)ing games once you fall behind - AllInForFlyers
because the overall talent level is obviously mediocre ... most recognize that this team isn't going anywhere as presently constructed. |

I don't understand what people want them to do -- there's 28 games left. A third of the season!
They have to keep playing and trying to win -- how can anyone realistically want them to roll over right now?

The flyers are down 8 points with 28 to go.
They have 2 of the top 5 scorers in the league.
They have a top 5 goalie in Mason.
Why not the flyers? |

90 percent of that roster is going to be back next season
If they poop the bed for the next 28 games, there is no reason to believe they won't next season either |

They're playing hard at this point which is great. About frigging time. Just no need to have 9 Dmen at the end of the year when assets can be received. Hextall has to be careful because if he sells too early after a 15 game unbeaten streak he's responsible for not making the playoffs. The squad is making it interesting. 8/9 points out of the next 10 and it gets real interesting. |

It's hard for any fan to WANT their team to lose. I've never watched a game and rooted for a loss. I just can't do it.
Having said that, it WOULD be better to lose a lot of games this season and get a good draft pick, rather than scratching their way into the playoffs only to be one and done. And that's exactly what would happen if they made the playoffs ... they would be out in 5 or (maybe) 6 games vs any of the top teams. |

The problem is everyone else is still playing games too and they're not all going to start dropping games.
Add in the fact Mase is out for a big stretch and its extremely unlikely we do anything but climb a few spots everyone will forget about in a few years time. |

I'm rooting for them to go down swinging. I don't think they can make the playoffs. But I don't want to see them die, either. There's enough pieces on the current roster that could be here in the future, when the team is better. Laying down to die leads to bad habits and apathy.
They're not bad enough to end up with McDavid or Eichel without winning the lottery.

They're absolutely talented to make the playoffs.
They haven't done that for the majority of the season though. |

Picking 5th is still a hell of a lot better than picking 12th. And if you wanna play the "who knows if the pick will pan out" route then all I'll say is the 5th pick will inherently always have more trade value than the 12th. |
