He was kind of forced to turn the team over to those guys
He was told he could keep Drury OR Briere, NOT BOTH
he thought he had a deal with Drury, & then Quinn Fd it all up by not allowing the paperwork to be completed
Drury got pissed & walked
None of that was Darcy's fault

As far as a trade to put us over the top...
1) those rarely work out... For every Carter & Richards to LA, there's 10 other playoff teams that made deals & didn't win the Cup
2) there might not have been a reasonable deal to make... How did giving up Forsberg for Erat work for the Caps? But at least they "went for it"
F that
3) I'd consider getting zubris for a 1st the type of move you're talking about...
4) again, those deals rarely work

And Darcy had those pieces to sell off BC he got them here to begin with

"Bold" moves don't equal "good" moves btw

Excellent facts and points made jd.

I think you missed the conversation.

It was
Darcy - Brilliant has earned respect. Crafting masterful winners

Murray - Stupid idiot douchebag, No respect. Cant fight out of wet paper bag.

- ImThatGuy

Ahhhh....
Yes, I didn't read all the back pages
Obv Darcy screwed up in many ways. I'm just saying he also did a lot of thing well...
And he did a GREAT job IMO starting this rebuild
Now Murray has the picks/prospects to make trades like he did yesterday

8 22+ goal seasons in a row isn't consistent?

It is too bad his back failed him.

- dadeadhead

Was it really that many? Wow, I lost track of that one

darcy did a good job selling off players for assets. Murray was able to put his label on the team and we still have tons of assets left.
- joshs

Ultimately, Murray will deserve most of the praise BC he's the one they'll turn all these assets into a "team"
I'm just saying Darcy got it all started in the right direction & have Murray A LOT to work with
I'm really excited for the future of this team

To a degree
He had constraints & did a decent job IMO
Def made some mistakes, and some were HUGE ones
But he also did many things well also

He could have had Briere for 5 mil for 5 years. Briere was the guy to keep there not Drury. That is huge mistake one.

How about saying he would match any offer for Thomas Vanek. Huge mistake two.

How about letting BOTH Briere and Drury walk for NOTHING. Huge mistake three.

His biggest knock is he held on too long for too much for "his" players and it bite him in the a$$ over and over again.

Not making bold moves does not mean its a win if you're too chicken sh!t to make a move to at least attempt to make the team better.

How about a Mark Recchi type move? How about adding blue line depth?

Take away Hasek (who was here before Darcy)and catching lightning in a bottle the first 2 years out of lockout (which he failed to put them over the hump) Darcy is a failure.

Darcy got lucky the NHL changed rules and when the league went back he was too far behind the 8 ball to catch up.

Yeah 4 30+ goal seasons and two 22/23 goal seasons.

He scored at a .376 gpg clip which equaled 30 goals per 82.

I liked his game. Just a shame about his back. He's been out of the league for 10 years now.

We are not at that point. We will see it happen in 2-3 years with Gaborik, Richards, Carter, Brown, Weber, Hossa.

These contracts that were signed 3-4 years ago that are taking guys until they are 40.

Ehrhoffs penalty would have been until 2022 and over $4MM per once he retired. It was a huge gamble.

- ImThatGuy

I doubt any of these guys will retire with all the $$$ they'd miss out on
I guess we'll see though

Most of those are front loaded contracts (like the Ehrhoff deal)

They aren't really leaving much on the table

If Hossa retires after the 16/17 season at age 38 he'll lose 4 years at a mil each in salary.

You might be one of the few that thinks buying out Ehrhoff was a mistake.

Look at his production on the Penguins...

- Stripes77

What's that matter?
Point is we could've traded him for a good return. (I know I'm making an assumption there, but a reasonable one I think) Whether it was Pitt or whoever we could've sent him to, his production wouldn't matter to u at all...
Only the return we could've gotten
I know it would've been risky, I believe we could've gotten a return worth it. And I won't believe player will retire with $$$ left on their contracts until it actually starts happening

That 2nd round pick isn't worth a cap hit of 4 million

Ehrhoff got paid $10 million in his first season he doesn't have to pay that back if he retired early. He isn't leaving much on the table

They tried, the recapture penalty was too much to risk for what would be coming back.

It's still a million bucks! It's more likely he'd be bought out at the end of that deal rather than retire
And ehrhoffs deal wasn't that bad

He will have earned $59MM of that contract not counting those 4 years.

To you and I, a million bucks sounds great. To a guy that has earned $75MM in his career, its nothing special.

Ehrhoff isn't lighting it up in Pittsburgh which surprises me.

Maybe he saw something we didn't in his play?

- dadeadhead

Possibly. But I don't think that's why he was bought out. Murray even said Ehrhoff didn't wanna be here & that's why the move was made.

Crazy how a guy with that kind of success gets forgotten. I completely forgot how many goals he scored, I just remembered all his back issues

Taken the rick knowing your young guns would need significant pay raises around the time he'd retire?

Even if he gets traded & it's by another team?
And what did the end of ehrhoffs deal look like?
I don't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't as bad as the Hossa contract, was it?
