You do realize there are only 30 GMs in the league, right? That's not that many. If you mislead another GM like that, you've just lost one working relationship. They also talk to each other. If word gets around that another GM lied to a peer, there goes at least a couple more GMs willing to make a deal with you. Trust does happen in the NHL, and it needs to happen, or else it hampers your ability to do your job.
