Reinhart wasn't ready this year, Kane is a question mark and no one knows what to expect from one of the two top picks. You still need a goalie, defense and more top six players. Future looks good, but you're not making the playoffs with that next year.
- Isles_since_6

Reinhart wasn't "ready", but he wasn't as far behind as most people said he was. In a throwaway year like this, I still think the better move was to keep him here. Give him the season to get used to what the NHL is like. We most likely would have seen fewer growing pains next year because of it.

Could have had him fo free though?

Trade maybe after waivers but Murray wouldn't touch him via waivers.

Oh, I see, by "those" you were referring to the 2 picks.
- Cptmjl

"those" 2 picks, yes, if you need clarification.

While it’s not impossible for a team that finishes last overall to make the playoffs the next year, it requires a hell of an improvement. With what the sabres currently have on the roster and how young their prospects are, I just don’t see it as at all reasonable to think they would be improving that much next year. Nelson, Lee and Strome took a year or two in the ahl for us before they showed improvement, dehaan took 3 and a half years, we got lucky Halak was available and we scooped him, and boychuk and leddy were fantastic deals. We also already had Tavares and Okposo, and signed Grabovski and Kulemin. We also were a playoff team the year before last.

To be as bad as the sabres right now, without a current top line player in the lineup… I just don’t see it next year. Maybe the year after you might be knocking on the door, but there's a lot of pieces you need and they need to be NHL ready

- Isles_since_6

If you look at your roster you had Tavares and Okposo and that's it. You signed more depth guys this offseason and got a goalie.

McEichel will be Tavares. Reinhart Girgensons Moulson Ennis Kane will round out our top 6 not to mention another move could be had like Sharp. I just see the Sabres turning it around a lot faster. Especially with guys like Pysyk playing over Benoit and Mezaros.

The pieces that you are saying that aren't NHL ready would be whom? The only question mark is Reinhart and I think he will be fine. This rebuild started 3 years ago.

A lineup like:

Sharp McEichel Kane
Moulson Reinhart Ennis
Gionta Girgensons Foligno
Deslauriers Mitchell Flynn

Risto Zadorov
Pysyk Bogosian
Gorges McCabe

is a VAST improvement just on paper alone. Not to mention getting a real coach.

The PP improves dramatically the only question mark is in net.

If its not Sharp its a player like him. If no deal is made then Girgensons moves up to play winger and Moulson goes to line one and then a player is signed in FA

He’s going to be a great player – I’m not dismissing him, but he wasn’t ready this year and when your top two centers are rookies and there’s not much after them it’s not the recipe for an immediate playoff team. In a few year? Absolutely when more prospects develop and maybe more trades, but it’s not an immediate turn around. There’s so much more you need on your team to make a run at the playoffs with the amount of competition there is for limited spots. You also have to figure the Flyers are going to try and upgrade their defense, the Jackets will be better if healthy, the sens young players will be a year older… It’s not just about the sabres getting better, you need a few teams to drop off and you need depth to get past injuries.

if it were not for the 2 big guns at the top of the 2015 draft, reinhart would have stuck with the big club IMO

One more trade to bring in another proven top 6 guy, a few free agent signings to help fill out the roster and help on D and we are definitely improving by a very large margin. A goalie isn't hard to find.

Each year from next year we will get better and better. Slowly moving in the prospects and filling out this team. Eventually becoming a dominant team that takes over the East.

I know you're not dismissing him. Actually, I agree with everything you are saying as to why they most likely won't be a playoff team. However, they very well could have changed that by letting Reinhart play here all this season.

According to Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News, the Sabres will reportedly pursue Luke Richardson for their head coaching job.

Ted Nolan hasn't been fired yet, but it's expected that he will be and the current head coach of the Binghamton Senators could be his replacement. Nolan probably won't be let go until after the 2014-15 campaign.

If this does end up ringing true its a huge mistake.

Not just that, but it makes Murray and Pegula look like some pretty huge douchebags.

Hire a guy so he can take the fall, while the guy that orchestrated putting this poopty roster together with all of his wasted moves this past summer that Teddy has been forced to coach is let go?

The guy that wants to stand in front of the media and act like he is shocked at what a bad team this is, or how bad it is?

He should know, he brought Gorges, Neuvirth, Benoit, Meszaros , Strachan in here to be this bad, and just let his best goalie leave to bring in another waste of roster space in Lindbach.

(frank)ing hypocrite scumbag son of a female dog.

If Nolan is not given next season with a roster not set up to fail by the GM, i'll never respect the guy, ever.

It's a piece of poop move if indeed happens.

I can't even stand the nerve and arrogance of that beady eyed (frank) for placing all the blame on Nolan and none besides in a "matter of fact manner during the interview" on himself.

I can't even wrap my head around this and the arrogance of that fool.

- BuffaloHardHat

You are of course assuming that Nolan didn't already know the score. It's very possible they told him they wanted him to stick around for one more year because they weren't planning to be very good. The 3-year contract may have been Teddy's reward for agreeing to basically be a fall guy.

Wow…you really don’t know the Isles roster at all.

We had Tavares, Okposo, Nielson, Grabner (who’s been hurt most of the year) and depth in martin, cizikas and clutterbuck. Add Grabovski, Kulemin and it looks better but the key was having Nelson, Lee and Strome all ready and contributing. We also had Hamonic and Dehaan on defense (who took time to be NHL ready) and added Boychuk and Leddy, and still have Reinhart and Pulock coming.

It’s not just add a couple guys and go, we took a long time drafting and developing essentially a second line of top six forwards before we had enough depth up front.

You’ve got Sharp added into your roster which is a big if, a ton of teams would like him. If you’re putting Moulson up top next to Kane both your top line wingers are scoring at about a 15 goal pace, both inconsistent and then you’re putting a rookie between them to play top line minutes in the NHL with a rookie center behind him.

Better, yes, playoffs, I don’t see you within 10 points of the final spot, which in itself would be a massive improvement over this season. Walk before you run.

- homiedclown

So two players that have played little or no time in the NHL and Evander Kane vault you into the conversation for the eighth seed next year? Not trying to be a douche I just don't understand how this happens?
