Ya it would be a huge step backwards to trade him off as a rental somewhere. I don't think we've seen the best Petry yet either. He's had a rough development with a lot of different coaches just like everybody else here. He's still getting better. |

I do.
He's gonna get 5 at the very least on the open market.
I'd say much closer to 5.5, maybe more depending on a bidding war.
Add to that a better team that might be a more desirable location etc
I think if it was 5 for a reasonable term, it'd be done. He's worth that ro us for sure imo.
I'd bet he's asking 5.5-6 long term - Ihateallofu
5.5 @ 3 years? maybe even give him 5.75 if needed? |

I've heard rumours that the Oilers were asking for a young defender for Petry, I don't know if that means a prospect or a roster defenseman. Not better than keeping him but better than a pick. |

Really? Like Legit #3 better? You guys are as bad as Leafs fans.over valuing guys and what not, and wanting to pay out the ass to play guys above their level. You pay him that and you guys will hate him more than Ference in a year or 2. |

I'd give him 5.5 for 4-5 years I think.
Prob even 5.75 over 3 years
It's abit high, but the step backwards without him and his age (not declining years) make it worth it imo |

Ok let's just develop players we draft and then get rid of them for 3rd rounders when they become good NHL players. |

Jesus Christ you are thick. Just foolishly throw money around to be the only team that hasnt lost a drafted player that wanted too much at free agency? HE'S A 2nd PAIR D-MAN AT BEST.
Do you want Petry on our top pair forever? I personally would like to see a defense where Petry is our 4th best, but that isnt gonna happen when we tie up all our cash in a handful of mediocre players.....have you no foresight? |

So your resigning to the fact that this team will one day be a playoff team or even a contender with Jeff Petry as our brst defenseman? Sorry Bubba.....its Mac T's job to get us a n upgrade on defense from Jeff Petry...I f he cant we will never be a good hockey team.....maybe an "ok" one at best.
You guys fall in love with your players too much. |

petry's a good third defenceman. MacTavish going into his 3rd summer as GM and its all likely Petry would still be their best Dman in october, for the 3rd summer in a row. Don't matter what he is he's the best edmonton has |

I think we might all be a wee bit enamoured with Nelson because of the wins, but we need to consider everything here....
Positives
-.500 record.
-Power Play
-Better performances out of Schultz, Klef, Eberle and Yak
Negatives
- Poorer 5X5 Possesion Stats
Other factors...
_Player Personal additions of Roy, Klinkhammer
Even if you want to beleive Nelson is the sole reason for the positives, and not the Natural progression of Klefbom, his positive impact on Schultz, and Roys chemistry with Yak, and that the team is indeed better with Nelson, have you considered that perhaps this is just a result of "change"? We've seen it a million times where a team has early success with a new coach but it is not sustainable. Should we not wait until seasons end to ordain Nelson the Man/
Also consider this....maybe Eakins was such a knob, and so disliked by the boys that they are just happier? I think there is as much a possibility that Nelson is not a great coach but is simply Not Dallas Eakins.
Let me put it like this.
Youre dating a broad for a long time and near the end all she did was nag and female dog and put you down and never give up the poonany...then you meet some other chick that thinks your funny and is all over you after a night of drinking....so you bone her and dump your GF and all is good in your world....for about 3 weeks, when you realize that this girl is nice and good in the sack ,but actually is pretty stupid, clingy and lives in a pigs sty.......Better than the last one...maybe, but still not the right one. - Jeropotato
I never said he's the only reason, but I think he has the guys crashing the net more. I just think Nelson deserves to get a full season. The team seems to always compete (with a few exceptions). Is he a better coach than Eakins? Who knows. One thing I know is that the players are playing much better since Nelson took over. We don't need the best coach in the league. We need a coach who can bring out the best in the players we have and I think Nelson has done that well so far |

I want to keep him, but I'm not overpaying him for way to long...its a bad idea....we need others to improve next year to make up for his absence. |

Who said I want him to be our best? I want to retain him to play for us and also upgrade on some of the guys we already have. In case you haven't noticed there are no defensemen available. We're not the only team looking for them and the ones that were to be ufa's are all getting retained by their teams for a premium because of it. If you can magically pull 3 or 4 top 4 defensemen out of your ass then go ahead and do it. But if not, you resign Petry and pay market price for him. |

read somewhere on twitter that method's 4.9M was benchmark anything close to that is fair
schultz isn't top 4, fayne needs a great puck mover partner to be top 4. Klefbom could be only top 4 quality D next year and at 21/22 with a lot of kinks and inconsistency |

I'd love a 3 year 5.75max. But at the end of the day we need someone to replace his minutes so OK,MM,DN don't have to next season. We can't go into next season expecting 3 of klefbomb/ Schultz /Marincin/Nurse to fill out our top 4. |
