You get the 1st pick this year.
You can't pick any higher then 5th overall the following year regardless of where you finish the next 3-5 years.
Makes you have to do something as you can't just flat out tank year in and out. - dadeadhead
I don't even think you would have to do that. |

I like that, maybe some very slight variations in the groupings of 5 (based on points?), but as I just posted, I think the worst teams in the league (bottom 5 as you note here) are who should get the #1 overall - stashu

I was just trying to find out some more information about what happens after 1. If memory serves me teams can only drop one slot?
In other news..... I heart Kathryn Tappen. - Slump Buster
She's accessibly hot, which is a plus.
Pretty sure it's just the #1 that's up for questioning - the big difference is now every non-playoff team can qualify or whatever so the distributions are lower for finishing with the worst record.

Friend that is the biggest boston hater i know wants the sabres to put and RFA offer in on Dougie Hamilton to really put the bruins in a lose lose situation any thoughts?
Imo he's a hell of a defender but if you can possibly screw boston or pick up a solid young player it could be a win win |

I don't like that bcz if your a celler dweller and there is 20 games left. Why bother icing a team that can win 1 game? In a perfect world everybody is trying to win every game and it works out that you finish where your suppose to. The reality is that management realizes that they have a bad team, if it was not planned, and they start playing to lose. - joshs
Hence the reason they are trying to change how it works. See Arizona, buffalo, Toronto and whoever else this year. |

For the coin it'd take, you're looking at giving up multiple 1st round picks over the next few years. Hamilton is a fine young player but not worth 1-3 lottery picks. |

The NFL has only had 4 repeat teams picking #1 in back to back years in the last 50.
Cleveland
Cinci
Tampa (2x)
Not having a lottery is about the same results. - ImThatGuy
NHL takes longer for player at age 18 to make an impact, hence why most teams picking 1st are still not good the following year. Colorado is the exception but they finished like 10 worst the year they won the lottery. |

Why? Does the team that wins have additional incentives to win the following year? |

They finished 29th in the league and won the lottery in 2013.

Depends on $ amount and if you do that, other GM's dislike you. Won't trade in future or any other way.
The compensation is not bad under $5m / year contract |

(We might be able to upgrade on Tappen). - nfph
we could do worse than Tappen... and she is hockey related prior to the sequins. so its less sexist, right. |

The NFL you have more busts. A number 1 pick in the NHL is going to play Everytime. |

No, I get that completely. I just don't see what the difference is. It's like watching a game live vs watching the recorded version. To the viewer the reveal is the same. - Slump Buster
I disagree. The live game was still played live, not behind a closed door |

Last team to do it was NJ in 2011. They won it from the 8th seed but was only allowed to move up 4 spots and selected Adam Larsson. |

I think its a joke they changed it this year. Generational talent up for grabs. Its owners and GMs who dont have to worry about finishing last worried about who finishes last. To me its stupid. |

Conspiracy theorist in me wants to think that the changing of the odds gives them some protection when they finally decide where they want mcdavid. |

So many people seem to think this but I don't see it. The league believes that lessoning the odds of getting the pick will lesson the likelihood of tanking. Nothing more, nothing less. |

I have let my mind wander down that exact same road. I dont think its rigged but you know people will be screaming about it no matter who drafts first.
I just think it would behoove the NHL to shut people up before they can even open their mouths by figuring out a way to have the draw done on live TV. |
