No, they only played 80 games back then. Lemieux was on pace for 213. In an 82-game schedule, Gretzky was on pace for 220.

Also, on pace or not, he still only put up 160 (which was amazing).

Shoot, my bad! Forgot about games played back then.

Still the best season ever considering the clutching and holding that had already crept into the league. In 85/86 they were putting up video game numbers...novice setting.

Major problem is still the defense. Bortuzzo and Scuderi on two pairings means if a team can forecheck youre going to be hemmed in more than not. Redundant in their inability to move the puck.
- Deadstar

I agree with that observation. It's especially pronounced when you have good forechecking teams that can send everyone against someone like Scuderi and he can't move the puck out of danger or punish the team for being overly aggressive.

Their play isn't the problem. Sure Crosby, Malkin, and Letang are possession beasts but the team is being destroyed by like of production from 1C to 6D. In previous years when the bottom six forwards weren't producing Crosby and Malkin were making the league look like amateurs and right now without their scoring this team is looking a lot like the Toronto Maple Leafs.

That said I don't think that expecting more point production and PP effectiveness is asking too much from guys like Crosby, Malkin and Letang. The most frustrating this is watching Crosby receive a pass at the top of the circle look towards the net....and attempt to force a pass through three players to Malkin.

And Ryan, you have said it yourself; "Shot Volume".

He fits better in Philadelphia. Trust me. The last thing the Pens need is a malcontent like him.

I don't think so. The next highest scorer that season was Lemieux at 141 points, giving Gretzky a 74-point lead (I think he had a bigger lead in 81-82, actually). Had Gretzky only played 60 games in 85-86, he was on pace for 161, still giving him the scoring title by 20.

those aren't really mutually exclusive. A lot of the stats kinda measure just that.

For example, you can see that Beau Bennett plays a lot better when he isn't with Brandon Sutter.

I'd like to see an analysis of how many more giveaways Sid hakes on a per game basis now vs say 2010, because to the naked eye, it's occurring a lot more now than prior years.

Agreed, 100%. As I mentioned the other day, Iginla, Murray and Morrow were brought in a few years back to win a cup. I happen to believe these additions completely destroyed team chemistry that season.

Impressive numbers for the time period, but Gretzky didn't go through cancer and chemo! I believe that trumps Gretz. Just my opinion though.

I agree that Lemieux had a great season. Heck, I saw him play that year and it was amazing. But Gretzky 81/82 and 85/86 season are still the best because, as much as Lemieux COULD HAVE put up those numbers, he didn't. No matter the reason's, he didn't.

I want to see scoring chances... This season vs the last 2. Perhaps it is just selective/recent memory playing in this, but I think we are having WAY more than before and puck luck is really hindering us as well.

Advanced stats cant give you this because the giveaways/turnovers/poopty passes stat is bogus or non existent.
