UFA who's going to be too old when the rebuild is done, and who could get us some value now.
That being said, I'd gladly re-sign him in the summer to act as a mentor for the young team. - Feeling Glucky?
That's my point. You still need a team, leaders to mentor young kids. You can write off a few years, you don't disappear by magic for that time and reappear 3 years later with a new team.
Do you prefer to have Kessel and Phaneuf to show kids the way or a guy like Winnik?
Pretty easy to answer IMO. |

Darryl Sutter on fourth lines in the NHL: "If they're only five or six or seven-minute players, then you're not a playoff team." - gravyface
I remember when people complained about Quinn voicing that same mantra. They said rolling four lines was a sign of a coach who was old, and stupid, and didn't know what he was doing anymore.

Kessel, no. #3, no idea what he does or doesn't do in the dressing room other than rule the radio. |

A guy like Winnik obviously, but guys like Winnik are available come July and August in the remainder bin of more competitive teams that are cap bonked from re upping their star players. Even better, at that point they're amenable to sign one year contracts at reasonable cost, just to stay in the show.

7 points in his last 9 with Phaneuf out. I bet Rielly finishes as our highest scoring d-man - GardinerExpress
That's a cool story, that doesn't mean he's our best defensively. But he's improving and he's a kid. Let's just not focus on +/- when it isn't even used for power plays. |

If the last few years has taught you anything, it should be that we suck in March, and the only one of our guys who performs in April is Reimer... |

Why would Winnik want to resign here though, its an assumption with nothing to validate it. |

Morning Leafers!
Question. If Winnik is so good, why don't you extend him? I understand and want the Leafs to trade Kessel and Phaneuf, but why Winnik? - fidopro I Completely agree 100%,I would love to see if we can trade Kessel,Phaneuf,Lupes.....but Winnik is from Toronto he playes every night..him and Polak I would keep for the youngsters..having the right people around is a good idea

because they are grasping at straws and the off chance that they get a first overall next year.
which will never happen because of the way the lottery is set up |

If they can keep him healthy long enough to trade him, it's working out pretty good. - The Shrike

Why do you say it will never happen? We will have as good a chance as anyone next year to pick first over all. |

It's pretty sad when it's been years since you could buy a Leafs jersey with a name on it that would be a keeper...nobody since Sundin and Roberts you can feel good about. |

That's right - I'm not going to rush this choice as I quickly regretted my last purchase - Bryan McCabe.
