I don't think anyone takes Phil or Dion before the summer - Canada Cup
Hard to take back 8 million in salary from a team that's in the hunt. |

It's probably better this way. Phil's production (?) isn't hurting the tank and we will get way more in the summer.

I think by the time deadline day is over, Bozak is gone along with Holzer, Booth, Jokienineininenin, and Winnik. Phaneuf will only go if they retain some salary, but that should only be done if its retained for a year or two, not the whole contract duration IMO.
Kessel Lupul and Gardiner gone on Draft Day..? - UsernameUnknown
I had heard salary could only be retained for the duration of the contract? |

I honestly don't get this... "not before the summer nonsense". I think that's the team management just making excuses for not getting it done now.
Team's such as Nashville, the Islanders have cap space.. to accommodate the entire CAP amount of either of those guys...
so I'm not buying the can't do it now story.
the skeptic in me (as regards all things Maple Leaf) says... management hasn't really internalized having to move either Kessel or Phaneuf.
and like someone already said earlier on here... they have got to move one of them asap (my opinion).
although Phil did actually throw a body check yesterday |

Then again, let's play fantasy here...
Let's say we get McDavid and Kessel gets his stay of execution... wouldn't he be greatly insulted that he was this close to being jettisoned and further mail it in for the next 7 years?
Then again he has no heart and doesn't give a (frank) anyways so moot point. |

Like I said, preparing myself for the worst.
If we get him, I will assure you I will self-bukkake on my own face. |

dealing him at the draft could net the best return, IMO... but you deal him at the deadline if the deal is awesome. |

I would offer a discount to non-playoff teams if they trade their first for him prior to the lottery.
Same with Phaneuf. |

I've heard this theory of keeping Kessel to play with McDavid if they get him but honestly, that isn't a rebuild. The new management team (sans Nonis) has realized these guys like Kessel and Phaneuf can't get the job done. |

Two teams in the hunt and with room now. A lot more in the summer when they shed their UFAs and know what the cap is going to be. Certainly not impossible now but better chance in Sumer

In this case, though, Kessel isn't "The guy", he's the support to "the guy"... something that is needed.
Remember how Sundin couldn't get the job done with no help?
Same thing is happening with Kessel now, and could happen with McDavid.
Keeping Kessel isn't all bad. |

Trading him in the summer means more likelihood of a bidding war.
But if a team offers an awesome package now, go with it.
We took back salary when trading with Nashville, no reason we couldn't do it with other teams now. |

What job are you expecting from Kessel? If it's anything other than score goals you are deluding yourself. |

You are 91.5% likely correct. But ............ that 8.5% is better odds than the Leafs have had at anything positive in a long time |

They still have JVR... I think Kessel must be moved at all costs. Too much negativity and drama surrounding him and it's not entirely his fault but it is what it is. |
