As it should be. We are in a playoff race. - VANTEL
Which will likely turn into the walk of shame if we match up with LA in the first round. |

i think he's very comparable to niklas hjarlmarsson. Doesn't have a big shot, isn't very physical, but moves the puck really well and has great gap control and skates well. if we get him in the low 4mil i'd be okay with that - Mungo
Good comparison. And I agree, 4M is basically 2nd pairing money these days and Tanev is definitely a legit 2nd pairing d-man. |

I say throw the first round and just take out Kopitar and Doughty. |

A pretty good comparison also. I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet but chris Tanev is a right hand shot. Seems to be a very rare and coveted thing among NHL defencemen. |

The Hjalmarsson comparison is actually really good, both guys aren't known as offensive guys, neither are physically intimating, and both block a ton of shots while playing very solid defensive hockey. Both can also make a good first pass to start a breakout. And if a team as good as CHI considers a guy like that to be a core player than the Canucks sure as hell can as well. And for all the CHI cap troubles, he''s one guy they never talk about moving, that says something about how valuable he is. |

I am not misrepresenting him at all. As I said I like him. I am not sure if Benning feels the same way. I am not 100% sure JB will pay a D man 4 mil that doesn't put up offense , that doesn't crush opponents or fight.
Everyone knows Tanev is a smart D man , let's wait and see how JB feels ? - VANTEL
The real solution here is to sign Tanev, as he is young. And ship out Hamhuis or Bieksa, as they are old.

With the way Brown's declined offensively, I'm just fine with him staying in their lineup. |

Never, that is the point... It's a stupid comparison
4.5mil isn't big money anymore, and if D don't get big money unless they are monsters then what is Marc Methot thinking right now? - bezz44
Is Tanev worth 4 mil or more. Maybe? Probably.
Is he part of Canucks future? I have no idea and neither does anyone else here. Benning traded for Sanguinetti and Pedan and an upgrade on Forsling as a stop gap.
The D men that he drafted all have size or big offensive upside ( Forsling)
For me to say he is not a Benning type player is crazy , and just as crazy for someone to say he is .
Tanev seems like a very nice Dman but none of us know if he is part of Bennings plans. The current D is holding nice, and a guy like Pedan in climbing the charts fast in Utica.
Let's see what JB does. I was pointing out other options of what he could be looking at |

I'm a big Hamhuis fan and as much as I ripped Bieksa earlier this year, he's still decent as a 2nd pairing guy if paired with a legit top 4 d-man, but neither of those guys will be top 4 players by the time the Canucks next wave of core players are here.
I'm 99.99% sure it won't happen at the TDL, but I'd like to see Benning look into moving one of them at the draft. Bieksa is probably easier to move, he's not a B.C. boy like Hamhuis and with the reputation he has around the league as a top 4 RHD with a mean streak would bring in a solid return. |

I still say Tanev ends up getting Bieksa/Hamhuis money (ie around the 4.6m mark). |

It's a trap game. It could very well happen. Emotional let down after we just beat the Bruins and looking ahead to the next game. These games are dangerous - VANTEL

Yup, I agree Bieksa is likely the odd man out. We just need someone to fill in and chuck knuckles for us once and awhile. Bieksa was/is always good for that. Hopefully Pedan can make the team in the next couple years. He seems like a tough SOB. |

I'd be fine with that. Around that 4.5 mark would be my max if I were Benning, and if for some reason he or his agent is demanding 5M per I'd start to possibly explore trade options. I know it's just 500K, but you stay stuck in mediocrity if you overpay every player by that amount. |

Pedan will likely be on the team next year in a 6/7 role, he's waiver eligible and Benning would look stupid if he waives him after camp and Pedan gets claimed after the Canucks traded a 3rd round pick for him less than a year ago.
The big Russian will be a Canuck this fall. |

Hjalmarsson is a very good comparable. I'd probably take him over Tanev, but very similar players. He got 5 years at $4.1M as a UFA. Tanev's RFA. More than $4M is an overpayment. |
