My biggest issue with the deal is that I just don't like Clarkson. Of all the RW's you could make a move for, he's one of the most overrated I can think of. I really, really can't think of a worse piece to add - vertigo1061
You fail to see that there is minimal difference between having Norton on LTIR versus waving Clarkson into the minors and paying him there. Cap is (effectively) 0 for both scenerios. Salary is only $1.4M difference over 5 years.
If I remember correctly, there may be some cap advantages of LTIR, but still....
So what do you think I am missing? - Lostinarink
Clarkson has a NMC and cant be waived even for the min savings it could gain..

This is because your ownership didn't want to pay both Horton and whoever was taking his place. All about saving ownership some money.
How can anyone in their right mind say this is a bad deal for Columbus? We have a player getting paid to play instead of a great guy who can't play anymore! If the guy doesn't pan out in Columbus, we can buy him out eventually.
But after escaping the nuclear bomb crater in Toronto he will likely be a better player on a team with a fan base that won't run him into the ground every night because the GM overpaid for him.
I hate to see Horton go, I hate to know that his career is over, he seems like a great guy and was a very good player when he was healthy last season for us. The CBJ did the best they could do in a tough situation. If Toronto wants to pay what they consider pocket change to Horton, great for Horton, great for Columbus, and thanks a lot for wasting the cash Toronto!

I suppose my problem is this....Is this the best deal CBJ could have made in this scenario? So you set out with the intention to trade Horton and essentially give a team a free salary dump on a player they don't want. Clarkson is the best you can do?

Well... since Colombus wasn't spending to the cap yet, this deal doesn't hurt them. Its far from ideal, but it gets them the whole veteran presence and leadership junk. Who knows, he might return to being a 20 goal scorer, that'd be a big plus.
They also without a doubt have gotten huge brownie points and future trade considerations with Toronto for taking this trade.
This tells me Blue Jackets ownership is more concerned with $$$ than they are the on ice product. - Erik6Karlsson5
Eugene Melnik .....nuff said, sorry if Jarmo is trying to be pro active with ownerships money, these are the trial and tribulations off small market teams in this league.
