I am not saying Don't try and make the playoffs. I am just saying get rid of a couple guys for better youth and let a couple of the younger guys come up and finish the year...see what they have for next year. If we get hot with the youth it could equal playoff success this year...who knows. |

Nope, as I said above. I have no issues with making the playoffs just to get the young guys a taste of it. But again, I'd say a top 5 pick would help this team's rebuild/retool more so than a first round loss, but this team was/is too good for that so you might as well try to get the experience.
And it's not just fancy stats, you can even look at goal differentials, 5v5 scoring if you don't believe in the fancy stats like Corsi and scoring chance%'s. Teams that are top 10 in those fancy stat categories are the only ones who win cups(not necessarily the top one, but you have to be in the upper tier, the Canucks are not). - Nucker101
We both know i have zerooooo knowledge concerning such stats, as such I'm curious about instances in which those might be debatable.
Was L.A in the top ten concerning those stats the first time winning cup?
Was Carolina?
Was New Jersey when they made the finals, ditto for Edmonton?

They need a taste of success. Teams like Edmonton have a huge issue of talent that has never had a taste of success. It is so important for development. - thundachunk
Taste of success or destroying the confidence of young players watching their teammates get pounded for 4 games?

Not about winning the cup, advancing to the second round. - VanHockeyGuy
Right, so we might as well wait until L.A and Anaheim begin to rebuild. Should only take 5 or so years. |

It does. Don't let the dollars going into his pocket steer you away from the franchise having success. This team should they make the playoffs will surprise. #darkhorse - thundachunk
We were 3 periods away from winning the cup in '11. It didn't exactly equal a recipe for success the last 3 years has it?
2 early exits (one of them a pathetic attempt) and completely missed the playoffs last year. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say talent is better than winning experience.
EDM just didn't give their young guns a d corp or solid goaltending to help em out. |

All that does is put money in Aquilini's pockets. Doesn't help us build a stronger team for the future - c_roy33
I would disagree and cede to Thindachuck's post earlier |

I agree that we are a bubble team. If Canucks are expecting to make the playoffs then they could make a splash if they acquired a Defensive Dman that had grit, like Bogassian , Despres or Engelland type . A guy that can stop the bullying of other teams. Also a top 6 forward.
Then I would like our chances. |

They had better get on it then, they have 2 1/2 more days. The team as it stands now? Nope. |

They still need that next year too . I don't expect to win a cup this year , but I am hoping we keep improving. I do expect us to be much more improved next year.
There was just too much to change in one year. I think Virtanen will play on the Canucks next year. He has to beat out Higgins. That is not hard to do |

So a team that busts their ass, shows the right attitude, and puts themselves in a great position to make the playoffs should suddenly gut their vets and call up guys who are not ready to make the jump (or they'd be up by now)? Sending a great message to the players, fanbase, and that's not even mentioning their "playoffs or bust" mantra they've been running all season. |

None of these guys are naturally physical. Kassian has to make a conscious effort to hit and I never notice Matthias or Higgins initiating contact.
edit: Matthias does drive the net and Higgins plays along the boards, but neither really dole out the hits. - hillbillydeluxe
It is hitting but it is also willingness to go to the dirty areas.

Not saying gut their vets. Higgins has proven to be solid but we need better production from a top 6 winger. And Kass just straight up doesn't want to be here... |

Personally, I prefer "scoring chance %'s" over Corsi/Fenwick. Some teams may take a ton of shots, but they're shooting from everywhere and not necessarily getting shots that have much of a chance of going in.
LA was 4th during their first cup win, NJ was 9th when they made it to the SCF vs LA. They didn't track that data during the EDM/CAR SCF, but I would have loved to see it. Ditto with Calgary vs TB. |

How high would you put stromes value at on nyi? And if tanev is asking around the five million mark I would trade him now while his value is rather high and get franson in free agency (big if he's not signed) |

No, just wait until this team has a core that is trendning in the right direction. Trading picks/prospect when you have an old core on a bubble team isn't the best thing to do.
Teams build stacked rosters with good drafting, ideally some of the guys you draft make the NHL and are effective, providing great value for their cap hit either ELC or 2nd contract). Canucks have Horvat, maybe a guy like Vey or Clendening, but that's not enough yet. Then you can go out an acquire a Carter/Richards, Gaborik, Sekera to push you over the top. |

Wow, really thought NJ came out of nowhere with that run!
The EDM/CAR SCF was certainly a surprise, i think their stats would be quite surprising. |
