i wonder if/when dumolin can really take that next step.
would really help next year. - stayinthefnnet
We shouldn't be wondering, that is the player who should've been packing for Anaheim. |

yes. dumoulin was very much secondary to despres in my list of value as well. i really dont like giving up on him.
nothing personal against lovejoy, but i really hope he made significant strides during his tenure in california. |

Next year he'll be up full time. WBS top D man playing big minutes in all situations. |

He's a lot better. He's a legit second pairing guy that can play 20 minutes a game which I don't think Despres can do. However, the potential value factor definitely has to weigh on the trade.

Took a little time to cool off and think about that deal.
Yup....still hate it. For a team that lacks size and youth, they gave up one of their biggest players and he is only 23. F*ck. |

i dont get to catch any WBS games.
he looked competent in the limited action that i saw with the big club, but largely vanilla. granted, it was a small sample size.
do you think he will be able to make a run for a spot on the second pairing, when the veterans leave? |

i agree. i still really dont like the deal at all.
however, that does help to at least show purpose behind it, if the brass thinks it makes the team better for this upcoming postseason.
at least he has next year on his deal too, for a very small number.
would anyone here have been happier if he was swapped for jeff petry instead? if you had to pick one? |

Dumo is being groomed as a Paul Martin like defender. A minute eater in all situations with the size and mobility to boot. I believe he will be a great number 4 in the near future, preferably with a guy like Pouliot. |

That I don't know. But he plays a very simple and safe game |

I don't know how much of an upgrade Petry would really be especially considering his salary and the fact that he's a UFA |

I don't really like it either. Petry would probably be a preferable asset even though even if retained, it would cost a lot. Petry is 4 years younger and wasn't traded out for a 5th rounder two years ago (which is where a lot of the Lovejoy hate is coming from). The trade has the potential to turn into a disaster if Despres develops into a top pairing dman as his physical abilities suggest he could become. Hopefully he never becomes more than what he is now. Though that seems unlikely to be the case.

unless lovejoy has REALLY improved, im inclined to think petry is probably better this year.
was wondering if that gap was enough to offset the fact that petry is probably a goner as an FA, whereas lovejoy at least has another cheap year we can use to bridge to the younger guys.
(whereas (frank)ing despres would have been cheap, AND one of the young guys moving forward anyway ![](https://hbcf.s3.amazonaws.com/images/emoticons/angry.gif) ) |

yeah, his measurables look great.
granted, he hasnt had much opportunity to show it off, but i was just curious if any of us have seen a good bit of tangible proof corroborating the notion that he is close to hitting those projections. |

I'm also pissed to see Despres go. I'd had rather seen Dumoulin getting swapped with Lovejoy.
Btw, maybe we are underestimating Lovejoy's progress as a player in Anaheim....we might find a reliable guy right in front of our eyes. |

He is reliable. But still, this deal only makes sense if Despres doesn't improve at all since Lovejoy isn't much better than him now.
Also, if they wanted to move Despres, they should have been more aggressive in shopping him and potentially getting a better offer.

These deals also make Scuderi's presence on the roster pointless. So now we have $3.3m wasted on him. The deal for Lovejoy should have included Despres and Scuderi. That I would have been fine with to clear that awful contract (obviously this might have nullified the deal).
