I do not for the life of me understand how expanding/changing the lottery odds shames a tanking team. Who is it supposed to deter?

Projected, season long bottom feeders? "Hey, you're a bad team. There are 3 slots the worst teams in the league get a chance to be picked for. Get better, or you might not be one of them, but if you get better you might also not be one of them, so integrity!"

Is it supposed to deter borderlines that fall into mediocrity, and just decide to commit full tank? An 8th-11th place team that just hara-kiri's starting in February, to finish last? The proposed changes dont preclude anyone from tanking for a greater percentage in a 3 slot lottery. It actually makes it easier for a lot more teams to tank less obviously, which is apparently a better solution than the 3 teams projected to be bottom feeders actually ending up there? Do we just want tank jobs to be competitive, instead of eliminated?

I just don't imagine a GM that wants to remain employed very long would actively strive for a categorically futile run (although it did keep Regier employed for 16 years...) for a spot that turns into a first round elimination, for a single-digit % chance at the lotto. The fixes people suggest dont ever change the reality they all seem to be mad at.

Shy of a bottom, idk 6?, tournament where the worst teams compete against each other to win the lotto spot, how do you ever get rid of the 'tank?' Are tanking for the bottom 3 and tanking for last place that substantively different? Even in this scenario, you'd need to hold two playoffs... one for the Cup, one for 1st overall. There isnt enough year-to-year draft fanfare to warrant it, and even if threre was, a Kings/Stars/Caps team that slips up late, will end up drafting first overall most years.

I just dont get the outrage over a team that is finishing about where it was projected to, because they didn't trade the futures they do have for, who, Curtis (frank)ing Glencross? He's the missing championship piece? Gimme a break.

I don't think changing the lottery is there to 'deter' the tanking team as much as it is there to give hope to the teams that constantly finish between 17th and 25th.

Think of it this way:
You have teams like Toronto, Jersey, Carolina, Ottawa, Florida, Philly, Calgary and Winnipeg who have been hovering around those spots for the last 5 or so years. These teams are missing HUGE pieces to ever become contenders, but they also aren't quite bad enough to get a top 3 pick.

So what happens? They either go out and make ridiculous trades to try to 'fast track' a rebuild (Philly/Toronto), or they try to tank (Carolina, Jersey). Generally, unless they tank (and I mean TANK, like Buffalo and Arizona are trying to do), they will be stuck in the same mediocrity for a very long time.

Teams can get lucky and scout well and get themselves out of their mess without high draft picks, or spending a bunch of money (Calgary, Winnipeg), but I think we all know that they sill have basically zero shot at the cup without adding a game breaker or two.

I like the fact that a team who has been mired in mediocrity for a few years, actually has MORE than one shot at getting a top pick.

I agree that it won't deter tanking by the really bad teams. What it will do, though, is give teams a shot at getting a good player who are trying their best not to tank.

It won't penalize tanking as much as it will reward integrity.

Think of it this way: If you're a team who is 17-25 for 3 or 4 years, in the new system, the odds are pretty good that you'll get a top 3 pick in one of those years.

I've been an AVID Hockey fan my whole life. Born in 69 and cried when that jerk BRAD PARK scored from the Blueline to knockout my Sabres and then was camping in Canada listening to RUFF get CHOPPED to pieces by BOBBY SMITH!

I purchased NHL package for a discount at $39.99!! First time ever, and its due to the TANK! I'm watching teams that SUCK play like its the playoffs! The NHL shouldn't change a THING about the draft. Should be just like NFL! You suck you get you good you don't! I mean we have picked first 2 times in 35 years! Top 3 only 3 times in 35 years. How does ANYONE have the audacity to say a word to US! WE ARE BUFFALO !!! HEAR US ROAR!!!!!!!

Lat year or so everyone thought the Yotes were a waste and they shouldn't be in AZ, the league ran them for how long? but now everyone is ok with them and is ok if they get McDavid, so it's ok if they tank because they only traded Yandle? the guy they have wanted to get rid of for how long now ?

Ive only been down here for about 8 months.
