Was he?

Yes your right. Sorry for the error.

Well, they did hit on Umberger v 1.0 (the good one) back in 2004.

Edit: And Nate Guenin in 2006.

honestly, the Vinny LeCavalier signing is probably the worst FA signing ever in Flyers history.
- KGBflyers10

Bryz was 10 times worse. You can hide a crappy forward on the 4th line or bench them. If you have a 9 year, $5m+ starting goalie who sucks you are totally (frank)ed apart from compliance buy outs.

Berube made a statement earlier in the year, that scratches were on an individual basis. What I take that to mean, is it's different reasons for different players. I think we have to look at what scratching a player will accomplish. I personally don't think scratching RJ Umberger would accomplish much. I don't think it will make Umberger better. I don't think it will make the team better, because the options to replace him aren't better for a variety of reasons. You can just scratch any player to punish them, but that's not really a good way to run a team or an NHL bench.
- MJL

So what you are saying is, every other player would gain something from being scratched, none should just play through it but Umberger? Plausible.

That is completely incorrect.

I just saw the RJ Hamburglar news now.
WOW!!!
I didn't think it was possible for Chief to scratch him
I will give him credit for FINALLY doing it but.... It's about 20-25 games too late.
At least Umberger can admit he has been a disappointment, I will give him props for that

But again, which of our glorious healthy scratches do you think will/would have performed better in his place?

So every other player that was scratched, was done so because they could either be replaced or gain something from being scratched, but RJ wouldnt gain something and or couldnt be replaced?

Seriously, I am trying to understand this one..

Yea, his play is certainly hard to replicate.

Maybe not hard to replicate, but hard to upgrade.

I don't know if there are cap implications but for now I would like to see more of Laughton or Straka.
Can Laughton be steady and allow the Flyers to trade a B Schenn in the off season ?

I would also actually rather see Vinny than Hamburglar. Vinny has " some" finish to his game while RJ has zilch!!!!

Brayden Schenn deserved the scratch more than RJ, and it may have a more positive result.

Yes, our other 2 NHL options (VLC and Rinaldo) have done so much better with their chances this year.

That's on Hextall, not Berube. Hexy makes the roster, Berube makes the lineup.

I see it as at least Umberger still plays a solid defensive game. Vinny and Rinaldo not so much. So even if Umberger is bad his defense was still there.

And I understand Vinny was a goal scorer and there is always a chance he could score but really how threatening has he been with the puck. Even when out on 2nd PP he never gets shot through or mishandles puck.

Their usage has also been nothing short of questionable.

Honestly if I were Cheif I would go with this tonight:
Simmonds-G-Vinny
Read-Couts-Jake
Bellmare-Schenn-Raffl
VDV-White-Rinaldo

His finish left two months ago. Against the Rangers with a minute left he shot the puck thru the crease from a few feet away.

I agree. I just think that Umberger, on the season as a whole, has been more productive than VLC and Rinaldo.

He has been pretty atrocious in all zones. He and VL are both a -9. Rinaldo a -10.

He has been pretty bad aside from a 3 weeks spurt. Its unreal that he is finally a healthy scratch for game #67 or whatever the hell it is.

What does scratching Umberger tonight accomplish? In my view, answering that question explains why it hasn't been done sooner.
