Good question. My guess is he likes the way Rinaldo has played the last couple of games, and he has played well, and he wants to give Lecavalier some playing time. So he chose to sit Umberger.

I think a young team would want him (Arizona, Edmonton?) but only if the Flyers eat some of his salary.

Vande Velde probably isn't going anywhere. He's cheap, he popped in some goals on 4th line duty and in the "Your Connections Matter" department, he played college hockey with the GM's son.

No doubt. VDV, Bellemare and White are good pieces to have for the 4th line, 3rd in a pinch, and pk.

White looks like he can play in the high end of the bottom 6 more consistently than the other two, but I agree with you.

It just seems odd to me that Umberger never experienced one of these scratches earlier in the season. Regardless of if it'd make him play better, he was playing poorly in the first semester, and other players could have given them a better chance to win.

It's all moot now, those points are gone and the season is effectively over. I just think the whole "individual basis" thing and his concept of accountability have been hazy at times.

I see what you are saying. Didn't realize his cap hit was around the minimum.

I think he has earned another contract and another shot to make the team in camp. if he doesn't then he gets waived and sent down if he clears. No reason not to bring him back

Umberger didn't escape being scratched because his play didn't warrant it. There was just really no reason to do so. Nothing to gain by it. The other options weren't better. By it's very nature, looking at it on an individual basis is hazy.
