Here is the issue. During the off season, there is no LTIR, so Pronger counts in full on the cap, with no exemption. The cap is rumored to be somewhere between 70-73M. The off season exemption to go over the cap is 10%. So let's say for conversation, the cap is 71M. That gives you a cushion of 7.1M to go over during the off season. Pronger's cap hit is 4.921M. They already have about 800K that they used for players on two way contracts, that they called up this year. Off season cap rules state that all players on one way contracts count in full, and players on two way contracts count in proportion to the number of days spent on the NHL roster. The more players you call up, the more you have to account for in the off season, limiting your maneuverabiity.
Right now, Pronger's cap his plus the call ups amounts to 5,721,000 of the hypothetical 7.1M off season exemption - MJL
30 days of Straka comes out to what, ~$150k? Cousins for 30 is about $130k.
~$280k off the offseason cap (that they probably won't need, since I doubt Hexy goes nuts on July 1 anyway) seems like a small price to pay to see what these kids got, IMO.
Ooooo, a "battle" between two non-playoff teams. Look at me on the edge of my seat with anticipation. - Scoob
Maybe Rinaldo can try to beat his old record of 17 PIM for jumping Antoine Roussell. Throw in a rough, maybe a cross check or 2, add a 10-minute misconduct to his game misconduct...should be good to go.

Have more evaluating to do with Rinaldo, Umberger, and VLC. These players are just scratching the surface.
Is morin or any other kids likely to get some games in at the end of the year? - Just5
Morin's team is currently tied for top spot in the QMJHL, so it's somewhat unlikely his season would end and he'd sign an ATO by the end of the NHL regular season (QMJHL regular season concludes 03/21). Flyers have 2 games after that in March and 6 in April. If his team loses in the first round, he could maybe play in the last 3.
The Phantoms play until April 19th, and have 7 games past April 5th, so I think he'd have a better shot at signing an ATO to play a few games in Lehigh Valley.

Playing Vinny at this point of the season is utterly pointless. Where was he when we were fighting for a playoff spot? Why play him now? - GOA88
How is playing Vinny anymore pointless then playing anyone else in the line up if we're not making the playoffs? I'm sorry, I'm not trying to attack you but this doesn't make sense.

Gotta play somebody. I'd actually argue that they SHOULD play VLC and try giving him top-6 minutes to see if they can squeeze any life out of him and maybe make him SOMEWHAT attractive.

I honestly think playing him makes things worse in regard to trade value

Problem is, finding a taker for him without retaining too much salary. Sounds like the few that were willing to take him last year wanted the Flyers to retain too much, which wouldn't help them out at all.
I don't get the Rinaldo thing though either. Some people are saying it's an even swap back and forth in the lineup... but at least Vinny plays with his head on straight and tries to hustle. With White being there and playing his role well, I would be fine with Vinny staying in the lineup. - WarriorHockey21
Agreed. I like Vinny but I more then understand that he's not carrying his weight. Most of these issues are on him but even when he does play well, he's not advancing up in the line up with the support of the coaching staff.
It isn't an even flip between Lecavalier and Rinaldo in the line up. Lecavalier averages 13 minutes of ice time on the fourth line with 17 points on the season, plus can actually be an effective Power Play guy. Rinaldo plays 8 minutes, has two assists and does nothing but hit. Lecavalier at times has earned a chance to earn his pay by playing with better players but Berube won't allow it.

I wish they would at least try this. If Lecavalier is nothing else, he's at least a shooter and a damn good one. We don't have a single guy with a natural hard and accurate shot. I'd call Voracek more of a playmaker and Simmonds more of a net front presence.

Right. I don't know what they're trying to do with him. Hell, let him play wing with Giroux and Voracek and see what happens.
