Did Hextall explain exactly by calling out the leadership but not placing it on the Captain? Is that a shot at the coaching staff? Streit and Simmonds? The vets in general? All of the above? - hereticpride
no he said its a group effort of about 6-7 guys usually middle aged, just my opine but I believe he left the coach out b/c he has every intention of firing him soon. |

Phaneuf drives me nuts whenever i watch him and I'm not even rooting for the Leafs. No, thank you.
If a trade is to be made I would much rather go all in on a legit number 1 than buy the bargain number 1 guy. - hereticpride
Well I'm glad you have confidence that Shea Weber, Duncan Keith and Drew Doughty will someday come available the same way Zdeno Chara has. Oh wait, he hasn't. At a time where Pronger and Chara were ever available, the league was still adjusting to the cap. That time is over. |

Yes he did. He basically said that leadership among players is not just the responsibility of one player, or just the Captain. It takes a group of players, to paraphrase.

Yeah, I'm not in that boat either. I'm fine with drafting and developing. What I won't be doing is panicking and trading for Dion freaking Phaneuf. |

At the very least he brings needed speed, skill and offensive creativity to the system. Corey Pronman and a couple other scout types I've read rave about his skating and ability to create offense. His size makes things a bit murky, but he could be a nice addition. |

He left the coach out of the conversation because he was speaking about leadership among the players. A coach is obviously not a player.

You're right, those players aren't going to be available. Doesn't mean they should trade for Phaneuf.

Phaneuf is a hot mess. There's no way I want him on this team, and there's no way Toronto is taking on AMac's craptacular cap hit and taking back some of Phaneuf's craptacular cap hit.
It was said above that Phaneuf would be the best defenseman on the Flyers if he were put on the roster. Thats great. We'd have a 4-5 defenseman to go along with our collection of 5-6-7s. |

The word panic is used too loosely. This is spoken like a person who's still waiting to win the lottery. Just my thought. |

Well we'll see how we look without a number one defenseman for the next number of years. Should be fun. |

No interest in Phaneuf from me, plain and simple. |

Even if you add Phaneuf, you still won't have a number 1. Toronto has tried to make him the centerpiece of their D for years. Have you watched them? They've made the playoffs exactly once since he's been on the team. |

I would love to see him or some of the other younger guys right now.
It is (for me) the only thing to look forward to when the playoffs are out of reach. Use the remaining games to try out the younger prospects in the system.
I hate that the stupid cap even puts a damper on this aspect of the season |

Crouse is a good prospect, he's played better as the season went on. A lot of people view him as a very safe pick, and figure he's going to be a quick path to the NHL.
He's got a good all around game, and his production has been hurt by his team and system. That said, he doesn't dominate juniors like he should, give his physical gifts. I've seen and read numerous scouts in him and they feel, at worst, he can step in and be a good middle six winger who can play any role solidly. - Jsaquella
Some kids take longer than others to develop. I was simply wondering if it's in the best interests of the Flyers to take the shut-down guy who might develop his offensive game and become a 2-way phenom, or do you take the guy who projects to be a scoring threat every time he steps on the ice and hope he can develop some defensive responsibility.
Either way, I'm looking forward to the draft and am confident the Flyers are going to get 2 solid players in the 1st round. |

It does suck. it's not even the cap this year, it's the issues moving forward that prevents it. |

Trading for Phaneuf is what Holmgren would do. - Feanor
If Homer was still Gm it would have been done several months ago

Phaneuf is better then a 4-5 defenseman. He's a top pairing defenseman in this league.

This is your argument?
Toronto hasn't had a number center since Mats Sundins. They have no depth. They traded years of first round picks to get Phil Kessel. They weren't making the playoffs long before they traded for Phaneuf and made the playoffs with Phaneuf as their number one defenseman during a year when we didn't make it. If we replace Mark Streit or Andrew MacDonald with Dion Phaneuf, I believe we made the right move. If we're waiting and hoping one of Morin and Sanheim become that guy in half a decade from now, well god bless you for waiting. |
