Outlaw intentional shot blocking...it used to be a noble sacrifice to block a shot, but with the body armor worn by today's skaters it is customary for all skaters to block shots.

That would be an option but have you ever looked at the goalie equipment of the 70's and 80's. It was very small and compact. Now they look like giants. Go back to the goalie pads of the 80's Problem solved

The fact that there isn't going to be any 100 pt players this season is a pretty short-sighted analysis to justify changing net dimensions.

Here is a thought Does anyone in this day and age count Goal post hit during a game. With all the other stats (most of which are crazy) this would give you an idea of how many more goals would have a chance of being actual goals. We have shots on goal why not shots that hit the crossbar or goal post.

This. Go back to the wooden sticks and reduce the equipment size on the goalies. Also remove the Kevlar body armor from defensemen. If the league did this and actually called the obstruction penalties, we'd be right back at a good level of offense.

With the advances in technology, injury wont be a problem, but the equipment will take up less net.

I would have to say the #1 reason is team defensive schemes. 10-15 years ago there wasn't such a focus on team defense as there is now. It isn't enough to be a goal scorer you have to play a 200 ft game as they say to be considered elite. Also as part of this scheme is the expectation of shot blocking. Even a few years ago, shot blocking was either a rare desperation move or something done by that one crazy player on your team known for shot blocking. Now everyone is taught and expected to do it in all situations. Because of this you had to develop new stats like CORSI and Fenwick to account for shot blocking.

Lastly, I think goaltender equipment is still a bit out of control, not as much as say a few years ago, but the jersey's, chest protectors and leg pads are still way too big and, especially with these huge goalies, make up in area for a lack of skill. There is no safety issue with smaller pads and it would force goalies to have to move a bit more and be more precise with their positioning to cover the right areas of the net.
