Which is why I said "akin" to it. Also, it would be 3-on-3, so you would be able to rotate more players in those 10 minutes as opposed to the 5-on-5 in 1983. You think the players were completely on-board with playing 5 more minutes of 5-on-5 but would throw tantrums at 10 minutes of 3-on-3? - jmatchett383
I don't think it matters whether it's 3 -3 or 4-4. Coaches are still going to shorten the bench. I think extending the game another 10 minutes isn't reasonable in my opinion. I'd rather they keep the shootout. The biggest issue I think they have to correct is some games are worth 3 points, and some are worth 2.

I think extending the game 5 minutes is reasonable. Extending it 15 minutes, which is 3/4 of a period, isn't in my opinion. - MJL
I'm one of the few who doesn't have an issue with the shootout because extending a game to crown a winner is a slippery slope. They already stopped using the Zamboni machine between overtime and the shootout because it took up too much time and fans want to get out of there. Heck, fans assume the result all the time and leave games with five minutes left in the third already. |

Hey, I've got an even better idea.
Reduce the game to 2 20-minute periods. If they game is tied after 2 periods, then play one period of sudden death. If that doesn't solve it, then just flip a coin.
Because we need to shorten the game and we must have a winner. |

I guess Im one of the few who never had a problem with a tie. 5 minute OT, no goal? Tie, each of you get a point. See you tomorrow. I hate this extra point conjured out of thin air.

I mentioned this before about the extension of game time in OT/Shootout
Even though most of the teams are flying by private charter, those arenas are staffed by union employees for many of the functions, not talking about concessions or team employees, people that are stage hands, lighting, etc Overtime $$$$ for keeping them longer has got to be an issue |

What people want is continuous OT. Nobody comes out and admits it but it's the truth. The shootout works, people just don't like it. They like it during the international games but it's not good enough for regular season NHL hockey. I don't think 3 on 3 will solve much more then 4 on 4 will. So what's next? 2 on 2? 1 on 1? All stupid ideas and your just heading in the direction of continuous OT until you find a winner, while wasting everyone's time.
The game is already fast and the appropriate length. |

Do they? Absolutely for the playoffs, but for the regular season that would just be asinine. I do agree with the rest of what you say about the 3 on 3 and the 4 on 4 and game length. |

I think the game is fine the way it is. The extra point gives teams a fighting chance to climb up in the standings. The single points in an undecided tie doesn't, which is why the change was made. It's not a perfect system but you pay closer attention to the standings because of this format. Right now the shootout is apart of the game. If you want to win, improve in all areas of the game. Giroux was once a guarantee in this area of the game. Right now I feel there isn't much of an excuse as to why he's not bringing it at this point of the game. He's our leader. |

The point is simple. Gretzky played at a top level in LA. - MJL
He played better in Edmonton with much better players and won 4 stanley cups which is the ultimate goal. How many did he win by himself in LA? |

The topic was about top players playing at a high level, with good teams and bad teams. Winning a Cup is about the team.
I don't know a single player in the NHL history that has won a cup by himself. So the question doesn't make a lot of sense.

Really, it's enough. I used to enjoy Lauren Hart too, but she overdoes the whole thing now. Stop doing the dumb white girl hand gestures while you're singing. Stop making every note last four bars too long. The only thing worse than trotting out the Kate Smith business is when Lauren starts singing along. Cripes its embarrassing.
Also, Lauren Hart: not terribly friendly in real life. |
