Not just Button. His passing game and IQ is through the roof, it's simply his shot and seeming lack of aggressive offensive tendencies that I think are the root cause for the concerns. I think it's a lot of needlessly picking holes, but it's still important to take into account. My only "issues" (and I'd hardly call them "issues") with drafting Hanifin, is that:
A.) I lean more towards the dynamic skill set that a guy like Provorov offers as we already have two safe-style NHL defenders in Klefbom, Fayne and Marincin and a crop full of lesser "safe" prospects in Oesterle, Simpson, Davidson, Musil, etc. As for dynamic qualities we have Nurse and Schultz.
B.) I know that the WHL is a tougher league to score than either the OHL or QMJHL so I feel more confident that Ivan's scoring will translate to the pros. However, my relative ignorance of the nuanced differences in scoring in all the college leagues is where questions about Hanifin arise from.
As of now, I kinda see Hanifin as a step above Erik Johnson while I see the potential for Provorov to hit even higher. I'm likely overthinking this, but I'm a sucker for dynamic hockey. I guess it comes down to if we draft at 3 or 4 for me. Either way, I pick a Dman. - MaximumBone
He has a great shot. I don't know where this comes from. hes got elite pp qb skills and can use a shot from the point.
its not boychuk bomb, but its hella accurate.
as far as the x factor, I don't get what this even means. hes a brilliant skater for his size, an elite passer and sound positionally.
with all those skills, he also is smart enough to know when to make the smart play.
some may like boom/bust defenders, but I think this league is being slowly inundated with the quieter two way defenders that can dominate at both ends like the oel's, pietrangelo's, hedmans, mcdonaghs etc.
I take those guys over the subbans all day long. in this case, I suppose its more preference.
and while you draw a parallel to already having quieter defenders in marincin, ill do the same in already having the dynamic players like nurse coming.
and while like Schultz he might not commit physically as much as some would like, hes much bigger and stronger than Schultz and can still outmuscle big forwards.
6'2-3 and 200 as one of the youngest players in college hockey hes only getting bigger and stronger.

In pretty limited viewings, Hanifin reminds me at least stylistically of Brodie

Not sure what those Moromon female doges are doing lying on the ground crying for. They are going to be paired up with a returning missionary after school, and pop out 4-10 babies, oh wait, soccer players are just giant pussies in general.

Dude, I played a rugby team from Provo. They were all Samoan. They were the worst group of people I've ever met. I'm not talking skill wise, I'm talking fairness wise. They were ten times worse than that girl. 3 of our guys had to be rushed to the hospital that day for illegal hits and multiple cleats to the face. Their club was actually banned by USA Rugby for two years because of their recklessness.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're making it sound like Provorov doesn't have many of the same elements as Hanifin. He's also a brilliant skater with great defensive instincts, he just excels more at shooting and having a physical presence.
But don't take my word for it:
An offensively gifted defenceman who can direct the game's pace when the puck is on his stick. Provorov is a quick and agile skater with an accurate release on his shot, which he can get off anywhere below the blue line; creates many chances on the power play and can even create offense during the penalty kill. Is an adroit and creative passer who knows how to use his teammates well. All-in-all, a complete defenceman who knows how goals are scored and executes accordingly. (Curtis Joe, EP 2014)
"What's interesting for me with Ivan is as offensively gifted as he is, it's his attention to detail and his motivation to be such a good player in all three zones that makes him special," McCrimmon said. "I think the best part of his game is breaking the puck out and leading a forecheck. He's been a tremendous player."
Provorov is No. 10 on NHL Central Scouting's midterm ranking of the top North American skaters eligible for the 2015 NHL Draft.
"He's very composed with the puck, has excellent vision and knows where everybody is on the ice," Central Scouting's John Williams said. "He has good hockey IQ and takes advantage when he sees an opening both offensively and defensively. He will play a physical game and can separate the man from the puck."
At the end of the day I think it just comes down to stylistic preferences.

I think the biggest item has been that we focused on McEichel all season, we are now realistically looking at who else is in the top 5. Hanafin will work nicely for us.

think I'd go #3 rated prospect all year over #10, unless we're trading down for a very pretty asset here

Some are for sure, but if I were to generalise in such a way and proclaim all gingers to be soulless splooge suckers, would that be fair...???

Your quick deflection just proves you find validity in the statement.....you limey bastard.
Teddy Purcell. Actual NHL player, this issue is that he’s overpaid. If Edmonton can include him in a deal—perhaps retaining some salary—I imagine several NHL teams would be interested in adding a perfectly useful veteran.
