And you are me best case scenario. What if all our picks don't turn out. You don't know that either. All these rainbow and lollipop guys. You can't assume best case scenario on everyone of our guys either - Fattony1187
Some will fail.
Some will overachieve.
Some will be traded. For who? Perhaps a top line player.
Perhaps the Avalanche wants our #3 pick. Perhaps they offer up Duchene. Just saying.
Know one knows how all this will play out, no. But to just bury this franchise if we don't get a certain player is short sighted and ignorant. |

You're right, but....
McDavid/Eichel are so much better than Strome or Marner
It really is a big deal
And what if Murray takes Hanifin?
People's heads will explode - jdfitz77
Then a defenseman is involved in a big trade for a forward. |

This.
There is a HUGE drop off between those players, hence, if we don't get McDavid/Eichel, this will be an epic FAIL, IMO. |

Don't think anyone is burying the franchise. It's that mceichel are legit #1 franchise centers and the next tier are just very good but not superstar players. people that want to bury the franchise are just as foolish as people that think a strome is the next Jonathan toews because they were both drafted 3rd.... |

I'm originally from Toronto (but have always hated the Leafs). My Dad's side of the family is from Buffalo and I have attended many games at the Aud and FNC. Anyway, since the game ended tonight, I have taken 10 emails and a few text messages from my Leaf fan friends. They are laughing at me/us for winning tonight. Of course they are telling me that we don't even know how to tank properly, Sabres suck, wide right etc.
It pisses me off SO MUCH that the Sabres won a completely meaningless game tonight and two nights ago. Playing for honor and pride - What I want is my team to get one of the two main prizes - end of story. I have been supporting this team since their inception (I am 50). I think I have earned the right (along with many others on this board) to hope for the best - re: finish last and get one of the two saviours. Even if they don't turn out to be saviours, I still think all of us Sabre fans have earned that right to cheer on the tank. The crap that we have had to put up with over the past few seasons - it's just not right what is now happening.
Strome and Marner will be very good players. I am sure they would be excellent additions to the Sabres and help make us a very good team - along with the rest of our up and coming talent. However, I don't want to be "very good". I want to be "great". I want franchise talent. I want the Stanley Cup. In my humble opinion, getting McEichel may not guarantee anything but it will get us a lot closer to this goal - and much faster.

Ok, but is this the last NHL draft ever?
Does not getting McEichel prevent our GM from making trades, especially from cap strapped teams?
Do our already drafted prospects not count? |

Why are you trying so hard to avoid the truth??
This team will not win a cup without one of these two players.
And if you bring up the crystal ball nonsense, I will tell you to look back at the past 42 years!!

Dude I don't know how many times I have to say it. I like our prospects. I like strome. He is several years away from being an "impact" player in the NHL though. Along with many of our prospects who are in JUNIORS still. Ya the team will be good adding strome but will be about 3-4 years away from being a contender. Sure we will have more drafts but that's the difference for drafting mceichel to strome. The timeline is a lot different. Even murray agrees. People already didn't like sucking for 2 years. What are these people gonna think when we don't make the playoffs for a long time when they thought we were going to get mcheicel??

WE HAD THE BEST PLAYER IN THE 1970 DRAFT!!!
WHERE DID THAT GET US?
THAT'S RIGHT.
NO CUPS!!!
NOTHING IS GUARANTEED JUST BECAUSE WE DRAFT THE BEST PLAYER. |

To be fair, Perrault never had the "generational" tag attached to him.
My problem with not drafting those two isn't so much that one of them won't be on the Sabres roster. It's the fact that both of them will be on somebody else's, which makes winning it all much, much harder. |

Maybe...
Hanifin-Bogosian
Zadorov-Ristolainen
McCabe-Pysyk
That's one of the top5 defenses in the NHL in a couple years
If u can't get a McDavid/Eichel,
Then maybe the best way to build a contender is with a dominant defense
There's more than one way to build a cup team |

How about we let the GM build the team?
Last time I checked, we're poised to have one of the best bluelines in the league in a couple years.
We have a deep goalie prospect pool and/or a GM willing to go get a good goalie.
We have Reinhart, Kane, Ennis, Girgensons, Grigorenko, Fasching (who they have been raving about), Compher, Baptiste, Bailey, Hurley, Possler...
And if, God forbid, we don't get McEichel, we can probably add Strome to that list.
Then there are trades to be made.
Why is it "my life as a Sabres fan is over" if we don't get one of these two? - grand-magus
Again, says the guy with the Sabres fan hugging his tank as his avatar. Congrats you're the biggest Sabres fan boy ever. You got that Sabres Richard half way down your throat 24/7. Give your self the biggest pat on the back ever because the Sabres failing at failing affects you "less than everyone else". |

That's a fair opinion, but the ppl saying we can still build a team that can contend without one of them are right as well.
Let's not forget, we had the #1 rated prospects BEFORE we even drafted Reinhart.
I'll be upset if we miss out on one if them too, but we'll still get a heck of a player
Either way, let's just let it play out & we'll see what happens |

We had some exciting teams and times in the 70's though and that is why I want one of these two top centers. I am so sick of these boring games with Matt Freaking Ellis' and our top centers being, no offense to Tyler Ennis who belongs on the wing, but him, Girgensons who is a rock soiid 3rd line all around center, and Cody (frank)ing Hodgson.. I want exciting teams! If challenging Cups happens too which is the ultimate goal great, but I want to watch exciting games again for the 1st time since Briere and Drury left. |

And grand-magus, get the (frank) off your high horse. Page after page of you acting like your better than everybody. That's what it seems like your just here to do. And your jokes about suicide aren't funny. Suicide is a serious thing and not something you throw around when talking about sports. I've seen you do it almost daily for weeks on here. |

Im pretty much with you, i think we have the right guy calling the shots, cant deny that sitting through this whole is gonna be a mike tyson shot in the gut though If we dont pick first or second. And bonus- a wealthy owner and a ton of cap room should help things out too.

Maybe, maybe not. We did draft 2nd last year as well. |
